  • Angel777, are you just the best sibling in the world ever? Wish my bro/sis would buy me things like that for Christmas! ;)

Sorry if i'm a bit late joining in the debate on this one, but felt like I just had to give my 2 cents!

I bought a psp late last year (after months of nagging the missus to let me have one) It is a fantastic little gadget and theres nothing wring with the graphics/sound or connectivity. I've just realised i can connect to the internet with the neighbours Wireless! The only thing is, I bought it over a year ago for its premium price, and so far have 3 games, ridge racer (nowhere near completion!) Grand Theft auto liberty city stories (not even on the 3rd island) and Pro evolution soccer 6 (not the new one but last years, is that 6?) and havent even finished one season! The bigest problem with me and the system is that i had to have it because a)it was new and b) it was a wicked little gadget i had to get my hands on! I havent been away anywhere to use it in the car/on a plane and would be too afraid of breaking/losing it anyway! I feel it is slightly wasted on myself and potentially could be on many others who own bigger consoles like xbox or PS2. I would naturally rather play the latest version of fifa with all available controls and options, on a large screen, or GTA games where you can turn the bass on the TV and again utilise the controls so your not using all your fingers and thumbs to make one movement, which would only take one press on the PS2 controls. The real test for its shelf life for me will be when the PS3 comes out and users can download/upload contect from the different consoles to one another.

My biggest gripe is that the buttons are less advanced than the PS2 so controls are slightly more limited, and the disc holds slightly less info (ie no commentary on footie games) for the price you pay for them. I would rather buy/receive a PS2 game as I get more satisfaction from playing these!

Its natural you want your brother to be excited and open a brilliant present on Christmas day, but why dont you do what Martin suggests and buy him a big box, maybe with the PS3 design on the front (you can get box art/console art of the net), with a home made console in it, and an I.O.U or PS3 voucher, promising to get one when its released, then get your name on a 'wish' list when its finally released! become a member of game and they will eventually offer people the opportunity to preorder when it becomes available. this would be better than him having more consoles than he can shake a stick at! My little bro has a PS1, PS2, Xbox, PC and is getting a PSP for christmas (not from me BTW) and is totally spoiled, and no one likes a spoiled kid! Surely one console is enough?
  • The PSP was never meant to rival a home games console - it is a handheld console (remember the last generation of them - the gameboy advance!!) even the "same" generation handheld console (Nintendo DS) in no way compares to the PSP.

As I said In my top post "I would recommend one to anyone who enjoys playing games/watching videos but is out of the house alot."

Its completely pointless getting it to play in the house as you are better off with a PS2.

However I work 5 days a week, and spend most of my 1 hour dinner playing on it. Also, when going on holiday it is essential! While its no good for taking to the beach etc (Sun makes the screen unusable and wouldnt want to risk getting sand on/in it or someone stealing it) its great for unwinding at night/morning and perfect for the flights to/from and bus journeys for trips.

If your brother wants a PS3 - get him a PSP! There are going to be countless games where you can play them on the PS3, connect your PSP to the PS3 and download your save so you can carry on where you were on the PSP. Also dont forget its NOT just a games console. It plays films & music aswell.

I've had a PSP since it launched over in Japan, so have had it for quite a considerable time now, but must admit I don't use it too much any more.. Certainly less in contrast to my DS Lite, which I picked up at release too.

I find that the PSP, whilst technologically amazing and very very swish.. Lacks a whole lot of 'substance', if you will. I've only played two games on it that I've thoroughly enjoyed - Lumines and LocoRoco. True, they're both highly addictive and my PSP got a hell of a lot of use whilst I played through them.. But, even so, there's only so many times you can play two games before you look for something new. As of yet, I've not found anything that can keep my attention or that is truly enjoyable.

The problem I've found is that developers seem to have really 'gone off' the PSP. I have friends who work in a local game store, and when you compare the number of people coming in to ask about the DS Lite to the number who want a PSP.. You can tell why. Developers have all gone where the money is - The DS. It's easier to make games for, more innovative and reaches a wider audience.. Despite being much less technologically advanced than the PSP.

To clarify some other points, as well - The PSP doesn't need to run movies from the UMD drive. Buy yourself a 2GB stick (going for £49.99 in GameStation, or probably less online) and download a program from the Internet to convert your DVDs into PSP-sized movies. There's many programs that'll do this for you, with more and more 'retail' programs being released that have all the right PSP-sized-settings programmed in already.

As for games running from the memory stick... Bear in mind that, whilst this is money-saving, it's also highly illegal :). I know this board is all about saving cash, but I don't think Martin or the Admin would accept game-pirating as a valid form of money-saving. Besides which, downgrading your PSP can do it permanent damage if you aren't careful.. If you don't know exactly what you're doing, you could end up with a completely dead PSP (i.e. One that is irrepairable, since you've done the chip on the motherboard permanent damage). Best to just save your time and money and buy the games ;). End of the day, if nobody bought games, the developers wouldn't have the money to make new ones...

Just my opinion :). Hope it helps.
