Best basic bank account?

I am in the process of setting up a DMP with payplan and they have suggested we get a new basic bank account as we owe money to our bank.

I have no idea where to start or what to look for in a bank account so any help would really be appreciated :)

    Hi special_kala.

This thread needs to be moved to the Bank Accounts section.

In reply to your question, I would (and probably most others) recommend the Barclays Cash Card account or the Co-op Cashminder they seem to be the most lenient with regards to your credit profile.
I on the other hand bank with Halifax with the easycash account and haven't really had any problems with them as I can do most at the Post Office now.

Do you need a branch for any transactions? Or will you need online functionality (most offer this anyway).

    Hi Special_Kala,

I've never had an account with them, but many mse users mention the Co-Op cashminder as a good choice.
If you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.

  • Oh i didnt realise. Can i move it or does a admin need to?

I think online would be ok for us. With basic account can you have a cash card?

An admin will need to move it - one should notice soon enough.
You will get a Visa Electron/Cash Card with either the Barclays/co-op or Halifax accounts to withdraw your money etc.

I use the Co-Op basic account and the Nat west step account. Both now provide full visa debit cards rather than visa electron, which are more widely accepted than visa electron, although will cost if you try to use themn for booking certain flights etc.

Have had no problems with either account whatsoever and would recommend both.

Hate to point this out but Debit card provided with the Co-operative Bank Cashminder (Basic) account is NOT a full VISA card it's still an Electron Card...even though the Co-operative Bank advertise it as one! .

  • I have a barclays one and you get a visa debit card which is great as a few places online don't accept electron cards ie tescos.
