HSBC trying to get around SAR request - sods

Got a letter this morning saying they have 40 days and will be sent to my nearest branch please advice of most convenient branch

I asked for details on PPI also that I had with a loan with them and they have said the following:

Unfortunately this office cannot provide details of your insurance as this is held by a seperate legal entity to HSBC Bank PLC. You will therefore need to write to the correct data controller to the following address enclosing the £10 administration fee: -

HSBC General Insurance Services (UK) Limited
120 Redcliff Quay
Redcliff Street
Bristol
BS1 6HU

I sent a £10 postal order with the original SAR request (no acknowledgement of this) and considering they are asking me to write to another HSBC dept shouldn't the one I sent cover it??

They also attached a letter to send back to them to confirm which branch I want to pick them up at which asks for my current address and customer signature, do I have to fill this in or are they being awkward?

Any help appreciated :)

  • Hi mum2be,

I am not 100% about this, but if you must sign, I would print your name and make it totally different to your normal signature, as they have been known to copy signatures in the past. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me will be along soon with the information you need.
If you've nothing decent to say, perhaps you shouldn't say anything.

Have you changed address since you got the loan? If so, have they written to you at all at the new address?

I have since moved address and have had a DCA sending letters to here to try and reclaim the loan amount, but I am not 100% on if HSBC would have my current address as other than this letter today they have never written to me here

The whole reason for contacting them is to get my PPI information which they seem keen to avoid giving me or making me pay through the nose for

If HSBC don't have a record of you at that address, then it's not unreasonable to ask you to collect at branch and confirm who you are. They have a duty to make sure they do sufficient checks to make sure that they don't give out private/sensitive information to someone pretending to be you.

Any particular reason not to give your signature? Presumably HSBC would have a copy on file anyway?

It is common not to give a signature to a DCA when disuting a credit agreement, as some of those have been known to copy/paste it onto documents. I doubt HSBC itself would need to that or be stupid to attempt fraud.

No probs with HSBC and signature, I just wanted to double check I am doing everything properly as its all very new to me

My main query was do I have to write to their Insurance dept and pay £10 to get my PPI details or do you think they should be providing them as part of the SAR?

PPI and SARS is not something I done a lot on I'm afraid. Have you asked on the PPI/claiming boards?
