Teacher and bankruptcy

I am a teacher and need to declare myself bankrupt very soon. Will this affect my job with the council?

  • shouldnt do BUT check your employment contract for any mention of bankruptcy clauses

other than that call your HR dept and ask..

  • It shouldn't affect your job at present but if you decide to become a staff govenor (or any type of govenor) then you would need to reveal your banckruptcy at that point.
Don't judge people on they way they look, the way they speak or what they're called because they can't help that.

Only judge people on what they say and what they do.

I work for a Council and considering bankruptcy went to my line manager said would not affect job, as long as you do not manage budgets should not make a difference, but check any how.
  • I'm a Head of Dept (with responsibility for a sizeable budget) and it made not a jot of difference. Nor will it come up on future teaching job application forms (unless, possibly, for an independent school, who may choose to ask the question), nor does it appear on an enhanced CRB check.

And the restrictions on being a school governor have changed. An undischarged bankrupt is no longer disqualified from holding office, or continuing to hold office, as a school governor. Only those subject to a BRO will be disqualified from holding office as a school governor.

If you want further reassurance, the chances are your HR Dept will be very helpful - you can always call them anonymously.
  • Thank you so much that makes me feel better, I will check with HR and union. Thank you for your help. It was one of my many worries at the moment. Thanks for your reply.
  • I hope it all goes well for you heather. It was one of my main concerns too but I can, hand on heart, say bankruptcy (now discharged) hasn't made the slightest difference as far as my job is concerned. Yes, I chose not to tell colleagues about it (none of their business as far as I was concerned) but from an 'employers' point of view it shouldn't have made a difference anyway. I checked with my Union (ATL) at the time and they were very professional and reassuring.

I've also since applied for other jobs (up to Deputy Headships) and none of the application forms for the 3 LEAs closest to where I live have asked about bankruptcy - so I don't imagine they would in other areas either.

    Good luck. :)
