Snoring solutions

I've got enlarged turbinates, excess mucus and my sinuses block easily. I'm currently waiting for an appointment for a CT scan and then they are going to operate to reduce the turbinates and drill my sinuses - nice!

One of the problems is that I struggle to breathe through my nose, and it's worse when I lay down meaning I snore badly.

I can only fall asleep lay curled up on my left side and once I'm asleep I'm a dead weight and it's difficult to get me to move.

Has anyone got any snoring solutions that would help? I'm keeping my husband awake a lot and it's really getting me down as I feel terrible for doing it :o

well I've tried a few, the only thing that gives my DH a good night's sleep is the spare room.:o

I've tried breathe right strips, the wrist contraption that gives you a little buzz/zap/shock when you snore. Him digging me in the ribs wakes me up but doesn't stop me snoring. Hot room or cold room, anti allergy pillows.

I think once I lose a bit of weight it will get better, I'm definitely heavier now than I used to be.:o I'm on a healthier eating kick at the moment though, hopefully that will help.

have you tried cutting back on dairy products, as these can cause extra mucus in some people?

    We haven't got a spare room :o

I don't have much dairy stuff anyway as I'm not overly keen on it. Just a splash of semi-skimmed milk in coffee and a scrape of butter on toast and sandwiches most days. Occasionally I'll have cheese cooked in something, like on lasagne.

I am fat so I could make more effort with the weight loss. I find that hard as there's too many crisps and biscuits in the house for everyone else and it's hard to resist them :o

He's got ear plugs that are like blu-tak but he needs to be up at 5.30am for work and would sleep through the alarm if he had them in on work days.

The appointment for the scan came in the post this morning though so that's progress on that front.

    .

Has he tried it? I slept with earplugs in for a few years as we lived on a busy road and my parents are both terrible snorers:o I never once missed my alarm. I use the shaped foam ones, the most comfy I have found - I like the Superdrug ones best, the Boots ones made my ears a bit sore.

Becles have you got some nasal sprays and drops from your doc? they should help
I had turbinate reduction and septoplasty in sept last yr and it was the best thing ive ever done. All the docs and hospital consultants will try and put you off - i think to do with budgets. I was insistant and got it done.

If youre not booked in then do it. i waited about 16weeks i think but was out in a day and fully recovered in a week. my snoring is nowhere near as bad now :)

  • Maybe take a visit to your dentist and ask about snoring devices.

You can get a device made that fits over your teeth and makes your lower jaw sit slightly further forward than normal. This expands your airway slightly and can help you with your problems

Becles have you got some nasal sprays and drops from your doc?

I've had everything! The problem has been ongoing for a long time now and I've had several courses of antibiotics, various different types of sprays, various drops, several types of antihistamines, been washing my nose out with saline, inhaling steam and olbas oil, and nothing works. The steam and washing brings relief for a couple of hours, but then the mucus just comes straight back. I've also been fobbed off several times with a viral infection that will clear up on it's own.

Finally got referred to ENT last June and they stuck a camera up my nose, then said I should keep going with sprays as surgery wouldn't fix it.

Insisted on going back to ENT as the sprays are not doing anything and I'm fed up with paying prescription charges for things that don't work. She still is trying to put me off surgery and says I have to have the CT scan first.

It's worse at the moment as I've had a heavy cold. It currently feels like I have two beans wedged up my nose and I've been smacked in the face. Even wearing my glasses hurts and they're just delicate semi-rimless frames that weigh next to nothing :o

Most of all I miss my sense of smell as I love cooking but everything tastes really bland.

Pleased to hear your surgery went well and you feel much better now. I'll keep pushing when I see ENT again after the scan.

  • Thats exactly how i felt before I had my surgery.
When i went to the doctors, she had a look up my nose and i said to her that i wanted the surgery - she tried to put me off by saying that it wasnt very nice etc but i told her that id take whatever meds she wanted me to but i wanted to be put forward for it. I think she realised that i was insistant so she referred me to the hospital ENT consultant.
The consultant at ENT was quite possibly the most Incompetant person ive ever come across in my life. She shoved the camera up my nose that hard that i pulled back, then told me that the surgery would be no good if i couldnt handle what shed just done. Considering that id be under general anaestetic, i doubted that very much and told her so.

She told me that my nostrils were too narrow(!) and that i suffered allergies and that the surgery wouldnt make a difference. She then told me that the headaches i get were due to migranes! At this point id had enough and told her that she may as well be a psychic as how she could diagnose me in less than 2mins without looking at my medical record was a marvel. Esp since ive never had a migrane in my life - the headaches i got were due to pressure (usually when flying or at high pollen) The nurse in the room laughed under her breath at this so im guessing i wasnt the only one shed fed this bullsh*t to.

She then told me that the operation would probably only improve my breathing 5/10 - well considering ive never been able to breathe through my nose since i was a child, i snore terribly and it was getting worse and i used to cough up all sorts of stuff (sorry!!) in the morning, i was willing to take that 5/10 improvement. I asked her if she could breathe through her nose. She said yes. So i replied that she couldnt possibly understand what it was like for me and to get me referred asap. At that, she gave me the filthiest look and signed the form and showed me the door. Obviously i was on her sh*t list for the day.

The result - well, i did get an infection which to be honest was smelt disgusting within a week of the operation but some antibiotics cleared that up pretty sharp. I went back to the consultant 12 weeks after the operation. She recognised me as soon as i walked through the door! She asked how it went - i told her id noticed a 100% improvement, and would like to know why she thought it wouldnt make a difference. She wouldnt answer - just thrust some papers into my hands and showed me the door

So, in conclusion to my very long winded post - DONT GIVE UP!!! You know yourself better than any of the idiots at the hospital. Theyre trying to save money on budgets which is understandable but if its causing you a real problem then push for it. They cant refuse you unless you are asking for something unreasonable.

Oh, i still have the nasal sprays and nose drops - both of which are the strongest type available and the doctors have said that i may have to have this operation done again in the next 10 years as its likely that the problem will return over time. But honestly - tell them youre not considering any other option that surgery if thats what you want. Its day surgery and I was under for about an hour and a half as it took them double the time as my nose was so bad! Dont let them fob you off.
