Chicken was a real luxury up until the seventies. We only had it for birthdays, christmas etc.
I can remeber going on a coach trip to the sea side with my mum and grandma. We went to a restaurant for lunch. Roast chicken was one of the most expensive things on the menu-my sister and I daren't ask for it but then my grandma said that if we wanted it she'd pay the extra.0 -
We have just had a very heavy down pour for all of 10 minutes and the sun has come straight back out! Dont think its going to have done much good and the poor tadpoles must be a bit battered:eek:!!
I showed ds2 how to use the lawnmower this morning and he cut the front lawn (with me holding the wire out of harms way!) despite him being the youngest he is a lot happier to help with practical things than his siblings for some reason:cool:
I have a large lawn at the front of the house (in modern terms I suppose) and it is open plan to next door, who's 'share' is considerable smaller than mine. But for some reason he will insist on mowing over a meter across our boundry to make their 'half' look bigger. I am getting a bit fed up of him wondering up and down twice a week with his mower on my patch of land (in front of my window) so am thinking of putting in a hedge. Many other houses on the estate I live on have done the same -as us humans like to mark out our territory dont we;)..
so....any suggestions as to what will be good for a 3 to 4 ft hedge that starts approx a meter away from my house and would need to be about 30ft long? I was thinking laurel but will that get too big?
If I could afford a fence I wouldnt be able to put one up btw as its in the deeds.
I have also listed a tent and some sleeping bags on ebay as we no longer need such a large portable abode, being the four of us instead of 5..am keeping my fingers crossed that they sell as it will go towards our summer holiday fundJAN GC- £155.77 out of £200FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200

We've had temps pushing 80 today, it was unbearable by 9 am, but since 3 ish we've had grumbling thunder from a clear sky and now it's clouded over and feels cooler and as if it's trying to rain but can't quite remember how.
C'mon, I have my "thunder headache" and sinus pressure, you know it makes sense, clouds, think of my water butts and let rip!
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Morning all
Well it appears the big yellow ball is staying firmly over south wales - and its meant to be here for the next fortnight! although I shouldn't really complain as its Easter holidays and we've been at the park most days this week. Football match this morning was a shambles - the other team couldn't even be bothered to turn up so we played our own team - the kids enjoyed it though and gets them out enjoying the sunshine - plus an added morning of rugby tomorrow.
I may also take ben over for all 'the passion' antics that are going on with Mr Michael Sheen tomorrow too. Should be a good day and the whole community is turning out for support so should make for a fun day for him and a quiet shift for me in work!
Besides that I have been absolutely mortified lately at the stuff my coop has been getting rid of - the piles of waste is just simply ridiculous! We had 38 multipack bags (6 bags in a bag) of Walkers crisps wasted a few weeks ago because they were a week over their sell by date. So we opened one packet, sampled themand offered customers one - explained that they were slightly out of date and gave 20 of them away so I am setting myself a challenge. I am going to ATTEMPT until my next pay (bar bread/milk/babys stuff - ie nappies/milk and juice) live off the coops reduced section and my cupboards - now I havent done a bit shop this month so have a few basics in like tins and pasta but my fridge and freezer are almost empty bar a few straddling bits and pieces.
Also discovered that I seem to have two very fertile spider plantsconsidering last year I couldnt find a spider plant for love nor money - when I saw wilkinsons had them I treated myself but by the time I got back to the shop there was two poor looking ones glaring at me to be taken home, so jumped at the chance and nabbed them for £1 each due to them being half dead. Now one is on my kitchen windowsill (Fred as Benjamin has dubbed him) and he has one shoot coming up which is about 6 inches long now and Thomas who sits on my bathroom window has a giant shoot thats about 12 - 15 inches long and another one thats about 5 inches!:eek::eek::eek: only problem is I've no idea how to go about trimming/repotting or growing them on etc!
Right well this message has taken me about 3 hours to write as Owen took over the computer and I decided to teach Benjamin how to ride hi bike - needless to say Owen has no patience with the first attempt and I have now put stabilizers on Benjamin's bike and he was much more confident with one little wobble so I think I will take them off soon and hopefully he should be riding but he thoroughly enjoyed himself and so did mummy - nice to be active again as last time I tried to teach him I had a 9 month bump in the way!
Anyway I had better be off and make some dinner as he's now starving so will take stock of fridges and cupboards too whilst Im at it and see if I have any fall back meals available in case my reduced items plan doesn't work! will keep the blog updated on how that goes though!Time to find me again0 -

Sammy -good luck with the bike riding, my OH has no patience and I have never managed to teach nay of ours to ride. A friend taught my eldest in just over an hour whilst DS12 learnt last summer after two mornings in the park with a proper bike guy. Am hoping to get DS7 into the park this year to learn and then maybe even DD5.
Its been a warm day with spells of bright sunshine but then just sort of nothing, IYKWIM, have raced round shops and got all I need for tomorrow, have decided that this year instead of flowers for planters that we will give my parents a grow bag with three tomato plants in and a small compost bag with some lettuce seeds planted. They dont eat chocolate so this is our Easter gift.
Am feeding ten tomorrow so having to be careful what I cook as the oven will not stand a full roast, so we are having a Gammon roasted this evening, a full salmon roasted tomorrow with new potatoes and salads.
Its cost way more than I would have spent on a roast but a roast would have been impossible to manage so I figure its a small price to pay -its made me realise how much I need to get our veg production going and producing.0 -
Asda just been, unpacked it and £43 seems to take up about 4 square inches of worktop
Then the RV told me that he didn't think I had the hang of this budgeting yet.:mad:
This the same RV who last week whined his face off that there was nothing to eat..:mad::mad:0 -

Offhand - I'd wait for the keener gardeners than myself to come along - but personally any hedge I put anywhere would be comprised of "edible" plants. Double duty then - privacy AND food. Win win:beer:0
