Butterfly Brain who posts on here sometimes, and every day on the Daily, had the motor on her washing machine go on fire on Saturday or Sunday. Luckily she was around at the time. After knowing someone whose house burned to the ground after her WM caught fire a few years ago, I never have any appliances on if I am out of the house or in bed at night. The fire brigade do give this advice too. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

"not recommended by the fire brigade." What is? Chip pans were the biggest household fire hazard by long way they never said don't use them. By the way they are cutting fire stations/firemen because there are so few house fires (relatively) today. Oven chips have save 100s of lives! Central heating also (the wiring on those old electric blankets left a lot to be desired). Then we come to the smoke alarm an absolute nuisance in a small house but when the log I put in the wood burner was a little to large for the opening so I left it hanging out till it burned down a bit..........pity I fell asleep Oh well I never did like that hearth rug!! not that it was that damaged the smoke alarm saw to that.
So how are washing unsafe to use at night or is it when the everyone has gone to bed? And why?
I think theres a mistake somewhere because if you said a tumble dryer is very likely to catch a light which they do, but I dont think a washing machine would..........unless someone know different.? ...0 -
Its not something I would have ever thought happens either, but I suppose any electrical appliance can be a risk. It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

Some years ago there were lots of warnings about leaving dishwashers running overnight as they were a bit prone to catching fire. I seem to remember one of the public affairs programmes running articles about families who'd survived fires started by dishwashers.
I suspect modern ones are less prone but we all have different approaches to risk and what we are prepared to do or not do.
Let's just remember that we all have different views and it's OK to disagree with someone, you don't have to criticise and attack people for having different views.
Let's not tell Gailey she's not trying hard enough though...she puts me to shame all of the time withe the amount that she does and we don't want her doing any more that she is already :grouphug:Piglet

Couldn't have said it better myself :beer:0 -
I agree PLP. This is an OS thread and in the old days people had a hell of a lot more to contend with than we do - but they made a joke and got on with it. Lets do the same.0

I would never adivse anyone how to use their own appliances or judge them for when they use them but there is an ad campaign running by our regional Fire Brigade at the moment so I mentioned it.:)0

sigh!!! so yes there are differences of opinion but that is what makes life colourful. Only please don`t shout at someone if you disagree. If anyone wants to do electrical stuff at night then that is their perogative0
