Specsavers trying to charge me for contact lenses I didn't receive after I cancelled

Hello.

I had been with Specsavers on Lensmail for two years but in August it was time for my biennial eye test so I went to Tesco (because it's free). They were also running a free contact lens trial at the same time and as the Specsavers lenses were leaving me with dry eyes I decided to try it.

The lenses were good so I contacted Specsavers to change my Lensmail lenses because of the prescription change and see if I could get the better lenses with them.
They put the contact lens deliveries on hold so I could have a (free) contact lens check and trial of the new lenses with them in store. Big fiasco. I made appointments they couldn't find on the system, waiting for 40 minutes, losing information etc.

In the end they gave me the lenses to try but they didn't seem to be the same as what I had requested, lower quality, poorer vision, and I told them I didn't want to continue with them. I also cancelled my contract with Lensmail over the phone and they told me to cancel my direct debit. Did that, heard nothing since, received no lenses.

I got a phone call yesterday saying that they sent me a pack of three-months of lenses in November and they couldn't take the money because I had cancelled my direct debit. I received no such lenses, had cancelled in advance of the lenses being shipped and had already informed them in September that my old prescription was no longer valid (they were the ones who had flagged up the need for the eye test in the first place- no current eye test means no contact lenses, so I was told).

Can they make me pay for these?
