Addicted to whoopsies?!...

Options
Hello there fellow OS'lers.

Just thought it may be nice to share some bargains we have found on our missions to reduce the cost of the grocery shop. I must admit that now we are budgeting so well I have taken to visiting shops on my lunch break on a monday to check for reduced items and then doing my shop on a thursday as usual after my half day with LO.

I don't know about you but now I have become fairly good at hunting out some reduced items (good quality meat at lower prices is my thing!) I no longer want to pay full price. This week I have spent £10 under our weekly shop budget for items in the meal plan which I'm pleased with but I have spent an additional £28 on whoopsies. Still feel slightly guilty though but I do feel it was better to buy when reduced.

So this week for the £28 I got some organic lamb mince, 2 free range sirloin steaks, 6 pork and chilli sausages, free range rolled lamb shoulder and 2 large free range organic chickenss! I am soooooo pleased. I have found that around here thhe best time for reductions is lunchtime when they reduce by about a third as later on in the day there is never anything left, so no really exceptional reductions.. But still loads better than paying full price, and means we can get better quality meat for less.

So what bargains have others found and do you have a time that you have found allows you to get the best prices? I just love a bargain!

Anyone else addicted to whoopsies? Lol.

  • I have found that around 5pm is the best time for bargains in my local Morrisons, even when I just pop in for milk I find myself doing a tour of the whole shop looking for whoopsies! I start at the bread, then over to the cakes, down to the grocery aisle, then up to the main fridge and round the back to the meats, I have had some real bargains on things that I do normally buy. I look out for things that can be frozen and get incorporated into my meal plans for the week.
  • I'm new to whoopsies really is I tend to shop at lidl where they don't seem to have many, but in morrisons last weeks I got some Indian appetisers reduced to 35p on the BBE date which are now safely tucked away in the freezer for a munch sometime :-)

The Co-op can be good for these. Got a pot of Hoisin chicken noodle for lunch 49p was £1.49. :D

Nipped over to Asda last night as daughter wanted a birthday card. Came back with 80p worth of reduced bread - pack of Paninis for DP's lunch, pack of seeded cobs (freezer), a huge bag of 24 white cobs (lunches/freezer) and a big oat loaf which we had toasted for breakfast and tea (baked beans on toast) today - all at 20p each.

Our local Tescos used to brilliant for woopsies! but I guess people over the last couple of weeks have become savvy to this as there is hardly anything decent. I found Asdas if usually best for meat which is what I tend to stock up on the most, but they have just refit that area of our local one and for the life of me I can't find where they have but that section!
Think the best one was at xmas when I got 5 packs of minced beef for 10p a pack. I also got a load of chicken thighs which I used for stews as well. Spent about £5 and it was enough to fill two drawers of my freezer, that should keep us going for a while.

It really depends on the supermarket when the markdowns happen and how much.

I agree that more people seem to be looking at reduced to clear.

I have local waitrose and they do some fantastic reduced to clear if you get there at the right time. Sadly not been getting there at the right time lately.

But did get some semi-skimmed milk for 10p for 2 pints in there the other day.

Lidl reduce by 30% and if they still can't get rid of it give it away the day before the BBE. I have had a pork joint and bread before.

  • Our local co-op is good for reduced stuff, had to call in twice yesterday so got 2 lots of bargains, firstly a big birthday cake down to £3, perfect as it was the husbands birthday, 2 chickens down to £2.69, 2 packs mince down to £1.50, then later got 5 big cabbages at 10p each, big pack walburtons bread buns 10p, 2 sweedes at 10p 5 packs of corn cobs at 10p, anything we don't eat will go to my chickens :)
  • My local Tesco Metro is useless at whoopsies ,but 9.00.a.m. in Sainsbobs on a monday mornming is good for lots of bits and they are usually just on the date as they are left over from Sunday.Asda's is too far away along with Morrisons. But I have been trying to stay away from supermarkets for awhile as I have such a lot of stuff in the freezer at the moment .I have just done a revised list on my computer to print off and it seems that hardly anything has gone down at all (do you think food is multiplying in there :):) ) I am going to make a point of buying as little as possible until Easter as otherwise I'll never get to defrost my freezer at all.
