Advice after losing my job

Hi guys, I was hoping someone here might be able to offer me some advice as to what I should do next......
Basically, I've done something really stupid and am now looking at being fired from my job for gross misconduct. I was struggling with my work and then to make matters worse I panicked over not having completed something and I lied to my boss about it. It's not something I am proud of and something I regret doing immensely.
I realise my mistake and just want to be given a second chance so am now looking to get any job that I can to make ends meet basically.
I understand that I won't be eligble for JSA or income support as you can't get that straight away if you're fired. Even if I resign before I'm fired I still can't get it. I don't even want to have to claim benefits I'd much rather be working if I had a choice.
Anyway, can anyone advise on what I should be telling my creditors and suppliers? My priority as I see it is to keep a roof over my head and to pay my utility bills and buy my food (as cheaply as possible) What should I tell my mortgage company, my loan and credit card companies, utility companies etc? is there a certain way to go about it?
Thanks for any help guys, I know I've screwed up and I hold my hands up but I just want to get my life back on track as quickly as possible.

  • Go through with the disciplinary process, you might find you end up on a final written warning. I suppose it depends if your kind of workplace is looking to get rid of people and how well you are respected by your management?

I did something similar and I lived to tell the story (just!).

I can understand you planning for 'what if's' etc and thats very sensible, but don't give up hope and regards to your debts some very helpful people will be along shortly ;)

  • The main thing I'm worried about is the gross misconduct. I get the impression that the disciplinary process is just a formality as I've been on capabilty procedure for some time now for not reaching required standards and this is the end of the line. If I resign now I may be able to negotiate a more neutral reference that has no mention of disciplinary matters or gross misconduct. On the other hand I may not though......
At least with no gross misconduct against my name finding another job may be a bit easier, even if I have to do temp agency work for a while.

In that case it seems you may be doing the right thing, good luck in finding temp work - there is work to be found if you're willing to hunt :)

  • Yeah, to be honest it's a really tough and scary decision to make and I've not got long to make it, the next day or two at most.
I'm basically treating the act of looking for a job as my full time job from now onwards, spend today registering with as many agencies as I could find. There's loads of bars and restaurants in town as well so I was thinking about going round them all and asking if they have anything going. I have no experience whatsoever in doing bar work and I reckon most places won't have any vacancies but if I don't ask then I won't get will I?

Have you been suspended? If not, do you have any prior warnings (for misconduct)? If not, as far as I'm aware they can't dismiss you.

They need to ask if there were any mitigating circumstances. Do you feel under any unnecessary pressure without just cause? Having family problems? etc

Companies who go down the disciplinary route to get rid of someone quicker than using a performance/capability route are really skating on thin ice and need to be careful.

Although it sounds like you don't have much time left in your current job anyway, you do need to spend some time thinking about your disciplinary meeting and making the most of the opportunity you have to put forward your side of the story.
