Statute Barred - they made a payment!

Had a debt which was well over 6 years since any payment/acknowledgement. Got a letter the other day from the DCA stating that I made a payment of £3.00 last July to the account, which I hadn't
I have one other debt with the DCA... although one is called Lowell Financial and the other Lowell Portfolio1 with different reference numbers, the address is the same. After some investigating, I found a letter from the debt I am paying from last August stating that I had missed a payment (£3.00), which at the time was odd. I am 100% certain they have used the cheque for this account to pay the other account which has been dormant for over 6 years:eek:
I have a photo-copy of the cheque in question from the bank, which clearly states the DCA name, and also the back of the cheque is showing the reference number that I wrote on it wich is the wrong number for that account they are saying I paid.
Just spoke to them on the phone regarding this, and I asked for the cheque number, they wouldn't/couldn't tell me there and then, and would get back to me!
Are they allowed to use a cheque with a different department and reference number on it?
Tony.
