Flu-like symptoms before period?

For the last few months, a few days before I'm due on I've been getting flu like symptoms (headache, sore throat, no energy, achey joints etc). I've been taking normal cold/flu remedies to deal with the symptoms but just wondered if anyone else had experienced this and found something which works to prevent it. I hoped there might be a vitamin or something which helped.

Hi Browngirl
I used to get quite run down and very tired before my periods-it is much better now but today, for example, I am wearing glasses because I woke up with very dry and itchy eyes (notwithstanding the fact that I am having a very rough couple of weeks at work) and this has happened before the days before my period. Every woman is different, but remember to rest more during the week before you are due and take care of yourself during the whole month- if you neglect yourslef it shows up during that week and the period itself.
I found that magnesium really helped to raise my energy levels. Having tried everything in the past i would go for :
- a good Magnesium supplement
- Lots of greens during the month, but especially during those last few days, fresh veg and fruit are very important
- Rest more and do some gentle exercise- overdoing it during those days won't help you either.
I don't think flu medicines will help you don't have a flu...
Not sure what else to add without knowing your lifestyle, but good food is really important- are you eating enough??Try and de-junk your diet as much as you can and drink pelnty of water, because you body has a lot of get rid of during menstruation and toxins add up to the load.

Do you have a regular cycle? i don't get the symptoms you do, but I do get pain severe enough that I have passed out on occasion. My dr suggested I start taking painkillers 2 days before I am due on, and it has made a huge difference to me.0

have you had a proper check up to look at what is wrong? Severe pain like that it is not normal or natural. Pain killers deal with the poin, but do not take away the root of it. If you haven't, I would strongly encourage you have a proper check up...
I used to have painful periods and very bad PMT - through a consistent and healthy chenges in my lifestyle, the pain is almost non-existant and the PMT much much less, especially if I take good care of my diet and stress and fatigue levels...I also think that switching form tampons to a Mooncup has helped enormously. There is no need to suffer0 -

Yes I have been checked and they can't seem to find anything. I'd rather not be 'messed about with' too much so have chosen to stick with painkillers - I won't be having children so don't need to know too much tbh. I'm a mooncupper too, definately less pain than with tampons.0 -

Ok, if you have been checked then you can rest assured you are not in danger of anythign serious... I agree with you on the being 'messed up ' bit. I found that life style changes are very important- any anxiety, sadness of stress really have an impact on my cycles and periods so it is always a work in progress with me, but it is well worth taking care of myself...

Thanks Londoner, I'll give the magnesium a go and have a look at eating more healthily. I thought I'd also start on multi vitamins and try and go for a decent walk every week as I wondered if that might help (it won't harm anyway!).0
