My wife has just rung me to say we're going shopping later to a shop where if you take a utility bill and ID some things are half price. Does this sound right?

Costco? Makro? JTF? All members/ cash & Carry shops so would require ID etc but not necessarily half price items.
Maybe your wife is trying to pull the wool over your eyes with the prices

Sounds to me like she's been offered a storecard from there? If so make sure that once you've taken advantage of any special introductory offers that the card is cut in two and the balance paid in full- the interest on them is hefty.

Or I could be barking up the wrong tree.
