Uni-directional USB cable????

My Canon 640 Printer will still send scanned info to my Vista desktop computer but suddenly will no longer accept Print instruction from the desktop computer. The printer accepts printing wirelessly from my XP laptop so it can print.!!
I have tried using a different USB socket, & also been through the routine to ensure Printer Spooler is switched on (it is set to start automatically).
I have tried to uninstall the software & also to do updates etc.
Whatever I do always results in a message to say " Error 1068 restart Print Spooler" and "the printer can not be found" I can't afford to replace the desktop computer PLEASE can anybody advise how to solve this mess ??
I am connected via a Talktalk Router.

  • A loose connection is a possibility. Before we start reinstalling printers and drivers and stuff, do you have another usb lead you could try?
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas.
But, if the white runs out, I'll drink the red.

If scanning works then it's very unlikely to be a faulty cable, because sending scanned information requires both send and receive directions to be working (the PC has to send acknowledgements back to the scanner to keep receiving data).

There have been quite a few reports of Printer Spooler problems on Vista recently, which may mean that a recent Windows Update has screwed the spooler function up on some systems. It may be worth trying a System Restore to a point in time before the problem started.

If the computer recognises its there, its not a faulty cable or port as bi-directional communication has to take place for it to see it.

Thanks White Christmas. I should have thought of that ! However I've tried it now & no change to the problem. I all points to this thing called a Spooler....Spoiler would be better huh. Bari.

Thanks fwor I've now changed the cable & I have also done a System Restore but the problem persists. I think uninstallation of Lexmark printer software may have triggered it in the first instance, but I can't put that back in either. I have also done as many Windows updates as possible.:( bari.
