I wanna buy a snap on tool box for my son

My son recently started a car mechanics apprenticeship and now wants to buy a "snap on" tool box, they start at around £1,500 which I can't believe, I expected it to be full of tools for that price but sadly not. As he is only 16 and can't get credit I am going to have to help him get one. It doesn't have to be snap on but he's fallen into the "everyone else has got snap on so I can't have a cheaper one" way of thinking. There seems to be very few suppliers and the prices look fixed. If anyone can suggest a cheaper supplier for these tool boxes I would be really grateful.

hi my son started an engineering course and i got him a tool kit from costco for 45 it has everything in it if you know any-one with a card take him with you so he can see it's a good bargain, if you just buy it he might not think it good enough (teenagers) my son is well chuffed with his set.0

He will probally have a tools salesman who will visit the workshop every month or every other month, they were happy to give my bro credit at 16 so this is probally the best bet. In addittion to the new stuff he can supply second hand toolboxes which they take as trade ins against new boxes, so get your son to speak to him!0

hubby works in the motor trade & everything HAS to be snap on! good job i am a moneysaver!! the snap on credit is quite a high percentage if i remember rightly (hubby paid his off with a cheaper loan as soon as i realised what he was paying them!). could u get a cheaper loan & he set up direct debit to pay it off? the good thing about snap on is that they do have lifetime guarantee, so will replace any broken things for free. if he is gonna be in this trade till he retires it will be worth it, is just a lot of cash to shell out at once! hubby spends so much with them he gets all sorts of free gifts - teddy bears, glasses, hats etc. i hope if u do spend this much that he doesn't get fed up & change career after a year or so!
oh, make sure if the tool box is kept at work that it is covered by their insurance.
HTH.
just thought, one thing that puts me off spending a fortune is working out how long it would take me to earn the money. realising it will mean he's working months, if not years, just to pay for the tool box he may see the sense in getting a cheaper one! just a thought.Cleaning the house while children are growing is like shovelling snow when it's still snowing!0 -
Do they have 'used' toolboxes that have been returned or maybe repossessed due to non payment, that you could access which would be cheaper!!!!. My neighbour is a Snap on dealer and I would be more than willing to ask him if you wish'Normal' is a dryer setting.0

Hi, thanks for helpful replies, he's still 16 so can't get a loan just yet and although he has promised if I take one out he will pay me back, I have been heard this before and although it sounds harsh I am not willing to take out a loan for 2-3 thousand pounds for him when he talks about paying me back at £50 per month! I've spotted a couple of used ones on ebay that I am keeping my eye on for him. Kiwifruit I would be really grateful if you could ask your neighbour about returns, thanks0

hubby has snap on this that & everything else. He pays on credit but told me it was interest free. You are worrying me now by saying its extortionate.
The reason he has snap-on is because he says nothing else comes remotely close to the quality. I confess when he told me how much his toolbox was I nearly had a heart attack, its a bit of metal to hold his tools in fgs. But if it means his tools are safer then thats fine. I can't complain too much because he bought it before we got married.
I'd say judging by hubby's experience that it is an investment worth making if he is serious about the career.

Extortionate? Not sure about that, it is expensive but then it is very very good quality and of course the prices also include the “interest free” credit element
There is a bit of competition now (mac & beta) but if you say tools most mechanics still think snap on (although most of them have a fair collection of non snap on in their tool boxes)0 -
https://www.machinemart.co.uk have a range of PRO tool boxes not Snap On but good quality and a fraction of the price0
