Fredrickson International chasing unknown EDF debt

Hi
My wife just got a call from Fredrickson International saying they wanted payment for an outstanding bill with EDF Energy (£300).
She did as she was told to do in this situation and explained she had no knowledge of the debt and asked them to write to her with details, but did let slip our new address.
Now for once, we don't know anything about it (makes a change!), from what I can gather it is for the house we rented before we moved here and although we gave the usual notice etc. we think that either they didn't cancel the account or the owner of the house, who moved back in after we moved out, continued to get electric in our name (although we have no proof).
Any ideas on what to do?
Our plan is to acknowledge the demand when it arrives, and ask for more information, like a copy of the bill, the dates the electric was used etc. and the transfer notice as we havn't received any documentation from EDF (while not acknowledging the debt) so that we can establish whether we do actually owe them money or not (I'm not paying someone elses debt if it's not mine).
If we do owe them the money then she'll offer £20 a month, are they likely to accept that or tell us to fo?

I suggest that you find out exactly what the alleged 'debt' is BEFORE making any plans for payment.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Yep that's my plan, I'm not paying my ex-landlords bill!
By acknowledge the demand I mean confirm receipt of the letter, not acknowledge the debt
