Default Error?!?

I asked a question a few days ago and have only just got around to looking at my paperwork and various credit checks companies.
Well when everything went wrong in 2006 I had a Notice of default sent to me from the CC issuer(which I still have) - I assumed this would be the date shown on my credit file.
Well according to Equifax it's not even on there but I found on CallCreditCheck that it is showing my file but the default date is 2009 when Cabot sent the default notice due to a change in the law -apparently. I can't get onto Experian without making phonecalls which at the moment I don't have the time to do.
Does the default notice have to remain on your file for 6years like everything else or can you have it removed earlier?
I am paying this debt back in full but feel it's a bit unfair that this is going to remain on my file longer than it should, especially as the original default is dated 2006 - surely I can't be penalised twice for one debt?

Cabot (0%) left to pay £2455 let the overpayments commence!

I don't know, but I thought I would respond so your question doesn't get missed. Have you had a chance to check Experian?0
