Travertine floor anyone?

Anyone here with a travertine tiled floor? Would you recommend it? What's it like for maintenance? Could you recommend your tiler? What about a local supplier of travertine?

I'd welcome answers to any/all of the above!

Thanks Des. I take it yours is sealed though? I thought that would help with the maintenance?

I had the opportunity to lay travertine in our kitchen and hall a few years ago. Heard mixed reports about maintenance and opted for an only slightly less expensive ceramic tile. It was a very bad choice - light enough to show all the dirt, not mottled enough to hide it. Tiler didn't do a great job, which doesn't help, nor does the (once) light-coloured grout. I've had a guy in to price lifting the lot, scraping back the floor and latexing it. Not cheap and I don't want to make a second mistake, hence the enquiry. It's a toss-up at the minute between travertine and one of the high-gloss polished tiles.
  • Hi
I have the black high gloss tiles and would definately not recommend them!
They look really good when clean however, we can be cleaning them 3-4 times a day and there are only two people in the house!
They show every mark and its actually very hard to get them showing the really high shine. They are mopped with scalding hot water and then have to go over them again with a flat style material mop.

Dont get me wrong when clean they look amazing and it may only be because they are black however would only consider them again in a cream.

PS- I bought mine in B&Q about £8ish a square metre (they are the big square ones- also used them as plashback on walls!) and they do look the part when cleaned- wouldn't pay any dearer !!

Thanks Deirdre. If I was getting high-gloss, it would need to be a darkish cream, with lots of marbling I think. I had grey/black high gloss in a bathroom in our previous house and they looked well. I have a mottled chocoltate brown high gloss in our bathroom now - it also looks well and isn't hard to keep clean.

This job now though is a large kitchen/hallway - big expanse, lots of traffic. Really can't afford to make another mistake with it!
