Thanks everyone for your replies. I'd never even heard of dowling rods before so I appreciate the advice. I think I'm going to pop into Tescos and buy the smaller sized one, its £6.50, and practice decorating plus I'll have a great excuse to taste it too :T0

OP - here's the link to the episode on BBC iplayer to show you exactly what's meant. The relevant bit is towards the end of the programme.

Am I alone in making my own cake?
I made my first Xmas cake (fruit cake covered in icing and marzipan) so I figure its the same thing anyway and I will save a fortune. I am going to make one to cut and perhaps cup cakes too.I have realised I will never play the Dane!

Well I am making my daughter's wedding cake too (are we mad Skypie ?)
I am doing three tiers, bottom one fruit and the next two sponge.
Perhaps you can have a trial run before your wedding but I'm sure you will be fine as you made your Christmas cake.
I have been perfecting my sponge cake and force feeding it to my husband for the past couple of months- good job he loves cake!
I think it's great that you're having a go, really personal touch and you shouldn't get too stressed as you can easily make a fruit cake a few months before your wedding.0 -
I think we are in the minority Maisie!
I'm not sure why though as I am shocked at the price of cakes!!
I've never tried sponge cake, I think its better received by more people than fruit cake but I LOVE Christmas cake (one of the best things about Christmas for me!)
Do you have any pointers for a sponge cake recipe? I am thinking I could do two tiers maybe (getting ambitious now!!)

I'm making our wedding cake!!
We are having a huge stand of cupcakes (7 tiers!) with a white chocolate ganache and cigarello cutting cake on the top.
I wanted to make the whole cake (ie not cupcakes but a 5 tier cake!) but as we are serving the cake for desert the venue and my mum said cupcakes were better:T0 -
Wow Banbury! That sounds amazing! How many will you have to make?I have realised I will never play the Dane!

I'm ding mine...well decorating them anyway! I've bought the fruit cakes ready made as they are from a company I've used before, i know they're lovely and they're probably cheaper than making them myself. i'll be doing the marzipan/sugarpaste/decorations myself, including making the sugar flowers!!
I'm having 4 tiers, stacked.0
