Overpaid by previous employer, should I have to pay it back ?

I fail to see what that has got to do with it?
There are some curious morals being expressed in this thread.
It is no more legal to steal from the richest person in the country than it is to steal from the poorest! Equally the public purse is no more sacrosanct than anybody else's.
The fault here BEGAN with the school / council. Had they not messed up the rest couldn't have happened.
That does not give the OP any right to keep the money of course but keep in mind who erred first!0 -

I agree with you, where the money came from doesn't matter a jot, yes the employer made a mistake and the employee should pay it back but at a rate that is reasonable to their situation. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

No if there hadn't been a human mistake made it wouldn't have happened but there was & the head was big enough to call up & apologise.
The OP then went on to spend the next £500. She knows it was wrong & is trying to make excuses for herself.
The poster who mentioned TC overpayment was probably addressing the OP who brought up benefit overpayments as a way to justify her theft.0 -
Equally I trust you have never, ever done anything wrong....
Never downloaded a copyright file? Never photocopied a map? Never claimed any "questionable" expenses? Never exceeded the speed limit? Declared every last penny of income?
Mind you don't drop your halo on your foot!
I have no idea what point you were trying to make. The OP appeared to be attempting to justify the keeping and spending of money that was not theirs by likening it to another situation. That attempted justification seems to be a poor attempt to salve their conscience.0 -
If Uncertain wishes to clarify then perhaps that might help.0

Looks like the OP has thrown her toys out the pram (paid for by the school/council of course) and stomped off. I expect she has gone to try and get a job using her physics degree and get back to the £50k salary she and her OH were supposedly on before she started spending someone elses money on essentials such as birthday presents.0

I am just reading the comments. Yours actually made me smile.
Why would I lie about earning a joint income of £50k ?, I have not lied at any point during this thread ! Just because I didn't rush to contact the council about their mistake does not make me a liar. I never denied rcving the money.0
