Just googled ingredients of Deep Heat and found:
    menthol - 5.91%
    eucalyptus oil - 1.97%
    turpentine oil - 1.47%
methyl silicate (ie oil of wintergreen) - 12.8%

Errr...that leaves about 80% of the ingredients not listed - unless someone has found some other site (ie that lists all of them).

Not sure if it would have helped my mum in law. She once confused Deep Heat for her Germoloid ointment!

Sorry to your MIL, but that made me :rotfl:

I am a fan of growly cream (as my gorgeous God-Daughter calls it), and rub it on my temples and muscles, but I really, really love the smell of Deep Heat. I know, I know, I'm really strange :p
  • Well, I can see your point, but stearic acid is usually something like palm oil or animal fat, triethowotsit biodegrades within a short time (the half life is about 10 days in soil), Carboxymethyl cellulose is celluose gum, as in the stuff derived from plant fibres, propylene glycol is metabolised by the human body into pyruvic acid in the normal process of converting sugars into energy, acetic acid (like vinegar) and lactic acid (the stuff that makes your muscles ache when produced by your own body).

The other ingredients are sheep fat, water and paraffin oil.

There's not a lot between them, really. They all contain petrochemicals in the form of paraffin.

Wouldn't touch anything with either propylene glycol OR paraffin in it, but then that's just my preference. Nothing with petrochemicals thanks (please note, penpen, I'm not saying ALL chemicals, just petrochemicals - there are others I'm not keen on, but that's the only one I'd like to avoid as an entire class). I used to live with a cancer research scientist. Reading ingredients on toiletries & cosmetics saves me a fortune...

Hmmm...wonders if I can feel another experiment coming on - ie making my own version of tiger balm and using something else as a base besides petrochemicals:cool:. Hmm...maybe lanolin? maybe lard? maybe hard white vegetable oil? Goes off pondering....

Try sunflower or olive oil. Or a massage carrier oil - you're unlikely to be able to produce a wax at home, but an oil version should be OK if you can get hold of the necessary pure essential oils. Somewhere like summernaturals or culpeppers might be a good starting point.

<cough>I *am* a research scientist working for a well-known medical research charity, and I have no problem with petrochemicals. I do however, have problems with many "natural" products, which are some of the most deadly substances known to man....

You can get tiger balm in some of the pound type shops now - 2 jar packs! I have used it for years for all sorts of ailments. I even put a bit on a cloth in Dgs's cot when he has snuffles as its the same as Vicks only much cheaper. I don't know if its safe to actually put on him as its strong. I used to pay 8.00 a jar  I am so sorry that you may have damaged your couch Lucy-lu. I hope it comes off, one of those things you couldn't have guessed would happen. For my 2 penny worth - be gentle and dont keep trying and trying cos the end result could be worse than the original - experience with my Aunts lemon carpet and a tiny tin of black paint - cover the resultant BIG patch with a rug :o
Clearing the junk to travel light
    Saving every single penny.
    I will get my caravan
