Houston, we have a drinking problem. . .

Sorry if this is a pretty daft question but although I'm aware of those plastic caps you can pop on top of a full size can to keep the contents air-tight, are there any such seals available for really small cans?

We're fed up with soda water going flat because we don't drink it every day but add it to the occasional whisky. The litre bottles are cheap but actually a waste of money because the fizz vanishes; the multi-packs we buy of Schweppes are an enormous waste of money at the price per unit charged. But at least there's no problem about fizz: open the little can, empty it into two whiskies, chuck the empty tin into the recycling bin.

I've decided it's really idiotic to carry on paying an absolute fortune for a tiny tin of soda water and that from now on, we're going to buy it in bottles. Husband says the way to solve the problem is to drink more whisky, more often, because that way the bottle will be emptied much more quickly.

Well yes. But in pursuit of money saving, I really hadn't wanted to have to turn into an alcoholic.

Advice appreciated -- I have this idea to keep the little tins and top 'em up with soda water from a bottle, then seal them until needed and leave in the fridge. But I can't find seals of a suitable size anywhere. Help!

Could you not transfer soda water from a large bottle into small ones rather than tins? (Saving the need to find lids) Any small bottle with a screw top would do ,if it was well washed before hand , or even a small jar perhaps.

Hello there, unfortunately I can't help, but will keep an eye on the thread as have the same prob with G&T's, can't stand flat tonic!! Not sure though that the idea of pouring from the bottle to the can will work though as most of the 'fizziness' will already have been lost by opening the bottle in the first place and then pouring into the can, although it may help if the bottle isn't constantly being opened, but as you can tell I have no clue!!:o

  • Can you make soda water with a soda stream?
Real men never follow instructions; after all they are just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put something together. :p
  • Yes you can I was just about to suggest that. The machines are quite expensive now, but you can find them now and again on carboots.

  • I think in this case buying the cans are worth it because you don't drink the water very often. If you drank it everyday I would buy the large bottle, but other wise you are going to become a drunk AND spend a ton of money on booze to save a few pennies on soda water, seems silly IMO.

My parents always bought bottles of coke etc when I was little, I was always jealous of my friends who had cans. Now I get it, ha!
  • I'm with your husband. Hic!

The answer to all your problems is a proper, old-fashioned soda-syphon. Failing that a soda-stream

And store the bottle upright. Less surface area to go flat. I usually pour it into smaller bottles and it's not too bad if you do it as soon as you open the bottle.
