Nice wavy hair - how?

Options
On a recent holiday I decided I wasn't going to be chained to my hairdryer and straighteners and decided to leave my hair to dry naturally. This is a fairly big thing for me as my hair is pretty dry with a slight wave and tends to really frizz up, and whilst this did happen on holiday it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be... The morning after washing it the night before is usually when it looked its best.

But - holiday hair is one thing, normal life day-to-day hair is another!

Does anyone have any tips on how to make my hair have a bit of oompf and wave in a nice, non-frizzy way? Any recommended products? I usually use Redken shampoo and conditioner (for coloured hair) and would like to give Argan/Moroccon Oil a try perhaps... Is it worth getting "curly hair" shampoo etc even though I only have a slight wave? Would that add to the wave/curl?

Thanks!

Lots of questions there, with the non hairdrying wavy hair, I find this hard to get right too- your hair sounds like mine: looks at its best the day following its wash and blowdry. I can't though ever go without blow drying unless I'm happy to look somewhere between a porcupine and a squirrels tail!

I would suggest using rollers to hold hair in place to emphasize any waves, make sure the rollers are large or as large as you can get to have waves rather then curls and if you can, get different sizes, smaller around the top, larger around the underneath of your hair.

You could try a serum beforehand but careful not to go overboard as too much will make it hard for your hair to hold a decent wave. Moroccan oil has alot of silicon in it (otherwise known as serum to me!) There are some serums which are not silicon and not manmade but these are hard to find and don't always work so well so I guess its a matter of experimenting and seeing what works. Argan oil is a natural oil but not all argan oil products are 100% argan oil IYSWIM.

Hairspray, mousse and volumising sprays could help but many of them really need heat to break them down and not feel so gummy or crunchy on hair. Have you thought about reducing the heat or time spent blow drying (so you let it airdry and then blowdry the last little bit?) as oppose to chopping it altogether?

Hope you get some answers which help!
  • I actually have wavy hair and after the advice from my hairdresser she said buy a curling cream and scrunch your hair with it when wet. I have have longish hair (to the bottom of my bra) i split my hair down centre and then rub a small amount in my hands and use one hand for each side of your hair and just keep scrunching, if that makes sense. Just don't use too much, i did and my hair was as hard as a rock! If you only use a little it does hold and keeps the frizz at bay too.

I have wavy hair too and I do this as well. I comb through my hair in the shower with conditioner with a wide tooth comb then do as lostkelly says (sometimes add a bit of serum). I quite like the Body Shop cottonseed curl boost and the Boots Essentials curl creme pot (about £1.29 so not too much to waste if you don't like it!). You could also tie your hair into a plait with a bit of curl creme at night if it's long enough?

  • The issue could be the type of water - I know mine behaves a lot better, even naturally dried, when I'm on holiday. Do you live in London by any chance? I find it really messes with my hair frizz-wise ...

I ditched the straighteners, (and blow-dried bouffants ) and now wear my hair in loose waves/curls.

My hair is thick, so I have long layers to stop the curl getting pulled out. I put some Boots curl creme in after washing (cheap as chips, but excellent, just read the reviews), scrunch the ends up a bit, and leave to dry naturally. I use Aussie 3 minute miracle to stop my hair getting dry, and only brush just before shampooing (or just after when wet).

Wash your hair before bed, leave it to dry naturally then dab some serum on ends/frizzy bits and put in a bun overnight. By bun I mean grab all your hair and twist it until it spirals up and you can wrap it round itself into a really neat bun held in place with bobby pins. I sleep with my hair like this every night and it gives me slightly wavy, toussled hair with loads more volume- think serena van der woodsen!

I agree with belfastgirl, I live in london and my hair feels much frizzier and drier here, when in Birmingham the soft water makes my hair much more silky!

I've done that before, and looked like I had a really crispy wet look perm!:rotfl:

I wish I could do this.. It takes about 6hours for my superthick hair to dry naturally in the winter!

But otherwise I would recommend only brushing your hair when in the shower before conditioning helps. Oh and I recommend serum for the ends.

Oh and I can recommend the Charles worthington salt spray - follow the instructions and bobs your uncle!

Ooh thanks for that! Will try it out! Will it work if you leave your hair wet overnight?
