CIMA charge. Right to complain?

Hi guys,

Just wanted your advice on something which had annoyed me & I thought was wrong. Sorry if the wrong section of the forum.

I am studying for a CIMA qualification and unfortunately I failed one of my exams last November, scoring 45% when the pass mark was 50%.

I was quite shocked and as I was only 5 marks off, I asked CIMA for a "Administrative Review". Basically a service where you ask them to check your script and send you your marks.

I had to pay 50 pounds for this service, but I though it was worth doing, just in case there was an error.

After paying my 50pounds online I simply got an email from the Exam Coordinator with my mark the 45% and what I had scored on each question e.g. Q1 5/10. This information had already been provided to me when I initially received my result so I emailed back the Exam Coordinator asking if this was all I got and why was it 50 pounds to pay for this (in a more polite way than that).

He informed me that the 50pounds was the just of getting my script out of storage. However I really find it hard to fathom why that would cost 50 quid!

Do I have any right to complain? How would I go about this?
To me it seems like a blatant rip off. Do you guys agree.

Many Thanks

You failed the exam, face it. I really don't see what all this jumping up and down is going to achieve.

I don't see how you can be shocked, getting 45% on an exam is a pretty big fail, regardless of the pass mark.

From the information you have given, "I asked CIMA for a "Administrative Review". Basically a service where you ask them to check your script and send you your marks." you appear to have got what you asked for. It seems to me you thought you would pay your £50 and would be told "oops, no actually you did pass"

You failed over half the exam and then complain because they still failed you?

The only thing you can do is revise and take it again.

GCSEs 50% is likely an A grade at worse a B
  • Not only failed miserably but wasted 50 quid as well.

The charge is probably set above the actual cost to discourage everyone who gets between 40-50% asking for it. The administrative review doesn't remark your exam paper - only checks the adding up on the original marking. I'm not sure what you were expecting to get from the service as they are pretty clear about what the service is. http://www.cimaglobal.com/Documents/Student%20docs/administrative-review.pdf

Oh and people extracting the urine for a <50% mark, the exams are quite hard to get through - its highly unlikely for most CIMA students to get through all the exams without failing some of them at some point. It was a waste of £50 though.

Indeed these are some of the hardest exams people can do!

Totally agree. All accounting exams are extremely hard to pass. Just look at the pass rates on the various accounting websites (ACCA/CIMA etc).

Not quite the same as doing media studies...!!!!

And yes I do know what I am talking about, I am ACCA qualified.

Exams are supposed to be hard!

By the way, have you done media studies? If not, it is not really fair of you to decide that it is easy compared to accounting.
  • ACCA and CIMA are tough, as already mentioned, only a small percentage pass all exams first time.

Take it as a fail, and just do it again
