Impacted wisdom teeth - agony!

Fewer and fewer wisdom teeth are taken out each year, and that situation is likely to increase. Hospitals are looking to save money by stopping "non essential" surgery. The prime candidates are varicose vein ops, tonsillectomies and wisdom teeth extractions.

No general anaesthetics are given to knock people out in general practice since 2002. You would have had to have been referred to hospital for that. For those who are nervous IV sedation is a good option as you do not ,in general, remember a thing afterwards, are very relaxed and most hospitals would encourage this for wisdom teeth removal.

Try some oil of cloves rubbed on the gums - it will lessen the pain (probably because it tastes so strong!)

No don't. OiI of cloves can give really nasty burns/reactions on gums.
  • I really feel for you Jen, it all sounds so familiar.

Boots do probably the best painkillers I've ever had for toothache - they are Cocodamol (as stargirl suggested) - Boots own brand is the best.

When I was really desperate I used to swirl neat whisky round the area. Usually I only drink Malt but suddenly even grouse would do - I'm sure it only burns though (and makes you smell like an alky!)

I called my dentist today but he couldn't offer me anything but a prescription for painkillers and a referral to the dental hospital. He took x-rays and the tooth is actually horizontal!

I'm in pain with my wisdom teeth. Both of my bottom ones seem to take it in turns to swell up and land me on antibiotics. The one on the bottom right has already destroyed the tooth beside it which was extracted because of the damage.

At the moment the bottom right one is playing up, you can see white under the gum but it's agony and no amount of ibuprofen, paracetamol and dentinox gel (lidocaine is lidocaine no matter what the source lol) seems to be helping. I just have a compulsion to chew on that side.

The teeth haven't broken the gum at all but I really want to see a dentist about this asap for some pain relief. Surgery is closed tomorrow so what are my options?

I like in the NHS greater glasgow and clyde area and I am registered with a dentist.

Can't you get referred to the Glasgow Dental Hospital?

I had 2 wisdom teeth lying horizontally (I think this was pre 2000) and put off having them out for ages but my dentist got an anaesthatist (sp) in and gave me IV valium. It was great - i didn't know a thing about it and walked home (short walk!) about 30 mins later . The dentist said there was a load of gunk under each one - yuck
The only downside was that I couldn't open my mouth more than a fraction for about a week after.

General anaesthetic and they took both my bottom wisdom teeth out. The one causing the agony was really weird shaped which was causing a lot of the problems (they explained it but I was half out of it at the time). Currently got stitches but the pain is a lot better already.
  • So glad you are more comfortable now. When mine were taken out the stuffed something that looked like tobacco in the cavity left and did stitches. Try not to rinse your mouth too vigerously for the first week because if the tobacco like stuff comes out you can get a dry socket which is meant to be agony!

I think i had to gargle with salt water when i first had mine done....:rotfl:

Glad they took them out, they really are one of the worst things to have probably alongside tonsils....

I know I had a couple of ice lollies when i had mine done to take away the pain.... ;)
