Messy iTunes

Hi guys,
My laptop is a little messy when it comes to the music I've downloaded over the years and I have folders everywhere. Plus some of the songs have random names full of underscores etc - not very clean and tidy.
Is there a programme that will find all my mp3s on my laptop and will sort them out and re-name them of they are labelled wrong? (using some sort of recognition system like shazam?)
It can be done manually I guess but would take me weeks.
Hopefully someone will be able to help?
Thanks

There is something called tuneup which looks good but I have never used it!0

I am trying it right now. My daughter had downloaded so many songs on my computer that I don't even know anymore what I have and where it is! The software is not free though, but probably worth paying for!0

What I would do is a search for all files with the .MP3 file extension. Create a new directory on your hard disk and copy all the .MP3 files into it, then open iTunes and set the same directory as your default, so any new cds that get ripped will go into it. Keep an additional backup copy of this directory on an external HD just in case.
Next, go to your iTunes and select all the track entries (Ctrl-A) and delete them. This will get rid of the indexing of the files in their old, scattered locations. When it asks you if you want to delete the actual MP3s as well, say yes (because you've already copied them to your new directory haven't you?). Once they've all gone, re-import from your new directory.
Your iTunes setup will be tidy again, with all tracks in the same location on your hard disk. You'll have a backup copy too.0 -
Wow. There really is nothing like someone who sounds like they fought iTunes, kicked !!! & took names to make it all seem straightforward. :A
As soon as I get the external Hard Drive I've been promised (a present I asked for), I will rejoice in hammering that interface into a benign & cooperative paste.
Many thanks uptomyeyeballs!
I'm house techie to 4 chaps, multiple iGadgets & other cheaper widgets & hence I asked for the external drive to make sorting the toys more easy... Correcting filenames is the sort of job I farm out to a child (scoobie per 20 tracks or something) as even I can only face so many hours of cut & paste.:D
Good luck alisong1!0 -

Thanks, I'll do just that then use the program to fix them all.

So if I just search for '.mp3' it'll find all my music files or should I search for others too?
Thanks

Realplayer does it too. Import all your music in there and in options there's a way to sort the music out in folders or no folders and file names too. I use this, it' brilliant0

Right I've found all the mp3s on my laptop but I've noticed there are songs on my iPod that are not in my iTunes.
If I plug my iPod in to my iTunes it will sync and delete the ones I've found?
How would I move the ones from my iPod to my iTunes without losing them?
Thank in advance
