My engagement ring - we've been conned

I don't have an 'engagement' ring. I have a ring that was made for my 30th Birthday (which was 3 months prior to getting engaged). This ring means so much to me... let me explain.

When I turned 21 MrD bought me a ring -a 9ct white gold ring with a sapphire and two small (insignificant really) diamonds on either side of the sapphire. When I received it I noticed the sapphire has a huge flaw that runs through it - like a shadow. Was I upset? Nope - it made it even more personal, it made it MY ring not just some other sapphire ring off the shelf. I could pick this sapphire out of a pile if I had to.

When I turned 30 MrD made me a new ring (well he paid a local jeweller to lol) using the sapphire from that ring and the diamonds out of my grandma's engagement ring. To anyone else they may scoff at the sapphire but I absolutely love it and it has sat proud on my finger ever since he gave it to me.

What I'm trying to say is - does it really matter if the claws are a different metal? Does it stop you loving the ring? Could it actually make it more individual and make it YOUR ring?

Okay so if you enter a contract where you pay for x but receive y you could argue that you were conned. But if you paid for y and recieved y,and then found out that USA y wasn't the same as UK x then I don't think you can complain. (Dunno if that makes sense!)

mrs drink...your story illustrates what I wrote on another thread a few days ago.....the sentiment is the same and possibly now applicable in charlies case too....

"At the end of the day however if you are happy with the ring thats all that matters...remember it will be given as a gift of love to last a lifetime...so whilst I can tell you about cut and clarity and certification etc...its you and your opinion that matters ...not mine...best of luck

I often end up wearing 2 hats when commenting on this thread....
The one where I can tell about the jewellery specifications...colours clarity investment pieces
    and
    The sentimental side
and this is where there is sometimes differences...some people buy a ring as an investment so want the best for their money or at least advice on what will hold its value..and others want the ring not for what it costs but what it represents...and neither person is wrong..they are just different requirements.
When buying an engagement ring some want an investment and some the token of love...

If you buy for investment then the criteria would always be certification and clarity and possibly recognised manufacture in order to allow the ring to appreciate in value.

If you buy as a commitment of your love and a promise to marry then budget shouldn't figure in the cost.

Over the years I have seen beautiful rings costing thousands...ive seen equally beautiful rings costing fractions of that...and ive seen the tin foil ring that is priceless...because it was given with love... "

My OH has loads of debt and chose mine as the main stome is amethys and I am a sucker for all things purple. It also went along with other purple themed things he bought for the very romatic proposal (a long story I've told elsewhere so won't drag up again now). Initially I was quite shocked simply because it's bigger than other rings I've worn (size doesn't equal costly!!) so it took a bit of getting used to, and he did offer to buy me a 'proper' ring but no way would I swap it.
The downside is that having been both romantic and very MSE with the engagement ring, my plans for a simple MSE 9ct gold band have been scuppered by the fact the shape of the engagement ring means I need to have a wedding band made to fit round it. Have still shopped round and got a good price but will spend a fair bit more than we'd planned!
Totally agree with all LEJCs sentiments, especially those last 2 lines
