tomtom get the best reviews. it really depends on what you want it to do, an XL is a good place to start basic model but has all of the features like lane assist, but if you want to use it on holiday for the US you would need one with a SD card slot, its messy without one.
You can get some cheap ones from companies like binatone but some of them dont do updates and you cant update the maps or the software on some of them.
Try the refurbished ones, totalpda often have good ones at lower prices, they are like new and I know 3 or 4 people who have bought them in the past.0 -

i had a navigon one which i hated. and then i left it in the glove box and it stopped working, probably because it got damp. I won't bother replacing it, stickj to a good old fashiioned map0

My son in law has a Garmin Nuvi 255 and thinks its good.
it has been updated and is now the Garmin nüvi 1255T
they are selling them on amazon

if you have a smart phone with gps have a look at IGO 8 software its what i use and its very good0
