I don't know if this is the right place for this question but I have heard that the green bulbs (which almost everyone uses these days) contain harmful gas and that, if one of these bulbs is dropped and breaks, people should leave the room. Sounds a bit over the top to me! Anyone know?

I hope for your sake, that's a joke. Green = Environmental! If someone is worth thanking - click on the 'Thanks' button on their response. It's just a nice thing to do :-)
Started debt at 17, stopped by 25 :-D ...I'm in debt again because of property :-/0 -
I would personally say they contain so little gas, you would have to break hundreds of them in a small room to risk illness. If someone is worth thanking - click on the 'Thanks' button on their response. It's just a nice thing to do :-)

You'd be correct in your assumption

The bulbs contain a very small quantity of mercury, in theory this should not be inhaled so should leave the room for 15 mins with window open.0

I should put this in the 'vent' forum really, but...
I hate these bulbs. They are so dim - even the 100w ones, that I struggle to see in the murky light they produce. They also take a minute or two to 'warm up' to full brightness - not much use if you are just popping into a room for 20 seconds to grab something. They are bulky and ugly and ruin the look of many light fittings and table lamps. They are becomming expensive now that the energy company freebies and supermarket offers are drying up. You cannot recycle them (at least not easily). And now to top it all they are poisonous. Honestly I don't know whether to :rotfl:or !!!!
rant over!

several interesting replies - I just had to thank y'all. I still find it hard to believe that, if a bulb is dropped and shatters, it's time to evacuate. They're certainly dim and, also, no good if you're into dimmer switches. I notice that some outlets are still supplying 'old style bulbs' and I wonder if they will ever be completely phased out...0

We use alot of energy saving bulbs here and they are quite bright, you do need to let them warm up to get bright so say a minute,0
