Hardware advice for 2 new PC's

  • I would recommend that you look at some PC magazines next time you are in the newsagents. They regularly have reviews of all types of PC's - normally by budget levels. It looks as though you have plenty to spend and I would therefore recommend (particularly for the gaming PC) a dual-core processor.

never buy ACER or other minor brands

You know that ACER is one of the top 5 branded PC makers? They sponsor Ferrari F1 team, they are not in any way a minor brand.

I would not reccomend Mesh in any way, they sell cheap pcs of very high spec, but if anything goes wrong they are very hard to deal with.
  • Point taken about ACER (though there is no indication if anyone has had good or bad experiences with them here), however I guess there are good and bad experiences with any manufacturer (whoever they sponsor). Personally I have found MESH great to deal with (some time ago), some friends have had mixed experiences with DELL (recently), and I don't know anyone with an ACER; I suppose it's a gamble whoever you choose as companies may improve/worsen over time.

For an inexperienced user I'd still certainly recommend using a major brand from a reputable supplier if it costs a little more. In any case to assist the poster of the original question, it's probably not that helpful to conduct a "battle of the brands" here. If only all pc's were sold on ebay we could have a look at the feedback for each supplier!!!!

    Good luck with the purchases.

  • Beware of Mesh! See:

The number of people with problems of damaged, incorrect and broken new systems is substantial. The posts on the Hexus forum are the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks Albertross, so does that mean Dell are the ones to go for?

That depends on what you want. If you're happy with a basic Dell, then it's a good deal, but once you start customising it (eg adding in extra DVD slots and that kind of thing), the price rises pretty steeply. If you just want an off-the-shelf one, then I'd wait till after Xmas and see what bargains the computer shops will have; if you want to customize it, I'd recommmend Evesham over Dell, as they're cheaper - I've recommended them to several people and they've all been very happy with them.
  • Have you looked at pcnextday as they do some good deals??

With a 2000 pound budget you could get a very good office pc from Deal for 500vquid and a excellent gaming system for 1500bquid.If you are going to spend decent money on a gaming system NOW then buy a system with decent dual core processor(Core2Duo or Athlon X2),2gb of RAM and either a Nvidia 8800GTS or 8800GTX.The Nvidia cards are the only Directx10 cards currently available and this means that they should be still capable of playing most games in the next year to two years.
  • Get an anti-surge adaptor, just plug in and protects from surges!! They cost bout £10 from asda maybe cheaper over the net and they would have prevented this in the first place.

I would try a local pc supplier/shop, but don't tell him your budget.
Get them to give you a spec and prices for both pcs and post them here.

This is probably your best bet for a deal for both.
The people here will give you an idea of whether it's good or bad value.

May be be better to hold on till after Christmas if you can..
Tis the season of no discounts..
