Quick question re: assignment

Hi all,
Hope you can give me a steer on this. I was made redundant whilst pregnant a few years ago and ended up defaulting on my Egg credit card. This was passed over to Moorcroft and I've been paying them £70 per month ever since, the outstanding balance is £1900. In November, due to car MOT and tax, I missed a payment and it seems to have been passed along to a company called ARC.
When they contacted me by letter I called them (my printer's died) and told them I wanted a letter of assignment as, basically, they could be anybody.
Anyhow, after a period of nothing, yesterday I got a letter from the saying that they cannot hold my account without an arrangement to pay and that they also want a SOA. Failure to make an arrangement will result in the account being passed back to their solicitors.
Can they request this without supplying a letter of assignment?
Thanks in advance.
