Sulfate/Silicone free shampoo

Newbie here and I have recently been reading about how sulfates strip the colour from your hair.
As I have just started colouring (too many greys) can anyone please advise what shampoo/conditioner combo is the best to stop the fading (and not too expensive).
I have thick wavey hair but it gets greasy quite quickly and I am hoping going easy onthe silicones will help.
Many thanks for your help

I've been trying "Happy Hair" for coloured hair on my very thick, heavily coloured and silicone hating hair.
It is free of most of the "nasties" and currently on offer at Sainsbury's.
So far so good. I've used it for about 3 weeks now and my bright red streaks are still bright and red. Does smell strongly of coconut when you use it but the smell doesn't seem to linger afterwards.0 -
IMO all shampoos lead to fading even if they say they don't- a big part of this is due to the water we use which itself leads to fading.
I would use a colour depositing shampoo, one with the colour actually in the shampoo where as you wash your adding a little back in again. Many brands do this at several price points. Everyone from Superdrug to John Freida to Aveda.0 -
A'kin shampoos are pretty free from nasties and I think my colour fades more slowly now that I use A'kin. It's about £13 for 500ml but there are often special offers here

Have u tried "Yes To Carrots"? The ingredient list is very pleasing, and at £7.99 for 500ml its not too expensive either

I am not entirely sure what Sofababe finds particularly pleasing about the ingredient list on the Yes to Carrrots shampoo. I found it quite nostalgic, in that it is quite an old fashioned approach. In fact I think it was so reminiscent of the eighties that it made me want to dig out my old Duran Duran albums. It is also based on a sulphate, which is what flutter9120 was specifically trying to avoid. The main ingredient is sodium coceth sulphate, which is a very close relative of sodium laureth sulphate. It is so close in fact that you would need a better equipped lab than the one I work in to tell them apart.
My advice would be before you try any new brand, it might be worth cutting down on how much of your current one you use and see if that helps. I think avoiding silicones is a good idea. They often appear on ingredient lists with names like dimethicone and trimethicone. For example, the dimethicone in the Yes to Carrots Nourishing Conditioner is a silicone. I am not so sure that sulphates are likely to be as big a problem. If I had the same problem the first thing I would try would be avoiding shampoos with sodium based ingredients high up the ingredient list. But you will probably need to do a bit of experimenting to see what actually works with your particular hair. Best of luck.Student of the science of beauty0 -
