M & S Sales refunds

Options
I bought a couple of clothes items this week in Marks Sale and would now like to return them.

I asked when I bought, if the items were non returnable and the assistant said yes but, I got the feeling , she wouldn't have said anything had I not asked.

I have a reciept with a normal refund date stated on it. Have bought sales items before that can't be returned and havn't been given a reciept.

From my own experiences at my store they will not refund you on items from the date they reduced them to say £5 and had the signs up saying items non returnable even if the receipt says the refund date is x. They look up the dates they had final reductions and if your receipt is on that or after you have had it. I have returned items bought in one store to another and had some success though so give it a try and if they say no take it somewhere else and see if their date was any different.
I suppose you could take them back without a receipt and try for a credit note but that would at the best be at the present till amount so probably be best to take them back as soon as possible to ensure they don't reduce them further.
They don't have to give you a refund unless faulty their refund policy is at their discretion. I suppose even Marks cannot continue to lose money that their competitors won't from their more strict policy.

  • might get more advice in the Consumer Rights section...
No two ways about this one: Anything Free is not a Basic Right..it had to be earned...by someone, somewhere
  • I bought some stuff in Marks sale a few weeks ago and was told sale items are non-returnable unless faulty - never known this before!

Have a look on the inside label.

From past experience you can return sale items with M&S unless there is an ink stamp on the inside label (where the washing instructions are).

The stamp makes the item non-returnable and its normally on items that are reduced really low towards the end of the sale.

Sometimes the clothes on the rail will already be stamped, sometimes the cashier will manually stamp everything as she puts it through the till.

If there's no stamp then you should be able to return it with a receipt.

Once the sale items become "manager's reductions" they cannot be returned. Manager's reductions are priced between £5 and 50p so there are some great bargains to be had, eg I'm wearing a £49.50 cashmere jumper that cost £5!
The shop displays red notices at tills & by the clearance rails, an ink stamp is put inside each garment and you should be told that the item is non-returnable when you pay.
If a garment proves to be unsuitable I either sell it on E-bay or give it to a friend.

    Thanks everyone!

I bought 2 x 7 piece Baby outfits at £9 each. They were originally £16 each. They both have stamps on the labels and on inside labels but there were no notices up etc.
  • I returned some sales stuff a couple of weeks ago and got a full refund of what I'd paid for them. They were only in the normal sale though and not managers specials so I don't know if that makes a difference.
