If you are thinking of Airsprung and are in their area then it may be worth checking out their factory shop in Trowbridge. Its only open Friday afternoons, Saturday and Sunday mornings - its not just Airsprung stock in there but also other makes in their group. Reviews of their stuff is mixed, but if you can get something of better quality than your budget suggests because its end of line etc, then you may be onto something worthwhile. I was in there last week for a single mattress for a 6 year old and picked one up from a discontinued brand for £60. The guys in there are pretty helpful and will put them either on the floor or on a bedframe for you to test - all seem to be well wrapped so not dirty etc.

Dreamworks are in Westbury which is an independant - not sure if they have a similar outlet.

    Hi,
I just wanted to ask is your Staples matress a non-turn.

    Thanks in advance.:)
Mine is indeed a turnable mattress. There is NO point buying anything else, else you are buying only half a mattress as all of the wear will be on one side!

The mattress is 3 years old now, and was an older model when I bought it. I was advised that it was one of the better manufactured versions before the Hilding Anders group lowered standards.

The above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!

Has anyone heard of the Dura beds? what are they like???

    Thanks:)
  • Joining with Jaarus here, after all my woes of my one month old Bensons Dorlux 1000 pocketsprung bed, I've decided I need a new mattress essentially, due to the assumed reflex foam simply not letting up on me and waking me at 2.30am every morning with not much comfort from there on. Last night at 4am I even laid on the floor for half an hour by the bed, to cool my back and the bed down...

Now, I've just spent ages running through all the threads, all the crazy arguing (wow, never knew the mattress world was like this!)

I'd never given mattresses a second thought, I was happy with my 7 year old coil one from Argos, even though you could feel the individual springs.
At my mums she still has a 25 year old single bed I grew up in that's like a bouncy castle, no problem for me, feels great.
I've slept on people's bare floor before with a sleeping bag in relative comfort.

My main concern is the heat, that's it really it seems!

My girlfriend said it gave her a bad back the old Argos one when she moved in, so that's why I got rid of it. So I do have to think of her too!

If I have a budget of £300 - £400, it looks like pocketspungs don't seem to come with latex foam rather than reflex. Does this rule me out?

I'm getting the airbed out as of this weekend until I can replace the old one and am in need of help.

Tim - I'm happy to listen to your own stock, PM me if needed. (I can't seem to PM you)

I'm not sure if you mean you want a latex topped mattress or one without reflex foam in it? I know a lot of pocket springs are foam encapsulated but there are plenty that aren't if that's the problem for you.

If you do want a mattress with latex as the comfort layer they are usually more expensive than equivalents with memory foam or other fillings and there isn't as much choice.

I know Yanis do latex mattresses and Rest Assured have their Pocket Latex range. There is also the Myers Latex Charm which is open coil with latex.
  • Hi Orrin,
    thanks for the message.
I'm no expert - or I wasn't one month ago, I feel like I'm becoming one now!
I was going on the theme that pocketsprung mattresses often have reflex foam around them, and that's what can make you hot, where as latex ones dont make you hot.

I don't like the idea of memory foam, and I'd just like a normal mattress like any other I've spent 33 years of my life in...

All I'm interested in is to know there is air circulation from underneath so the heat doesn't build up.

Nobody seems to mention open coil anymore - I guess thats the type of bed everyone grew up with.... maybe I should just get a decent one of those?

Orrin, any examples of non-foam encapsulated, if that solves my heating issue, would be great.

Dreamworks DO NOT have a factory shop. They don't want to annoy their retailors by under cutting them.

Airsprung shop normally sells mail order and argos returns along with other dead end stock from the factory.

I wouldn't really know where to start with a recommendation as there is so much choice out there. For what it's worth I didn't think that the Benson's Dorlux 1000 was foam encapsulated so maybe check with the manufacturer what the exact composition is and see if they can shed any light on what might be causing the overheating issue.

Rather than a new mattress you could try an Outlast cover which are supposed to help regulate your body temperature. They aren't cheap but would be a lot cheaper than a new mattress.
