second job

hubby has a full time job earning a basic of about £27500 he sometimes earns commission but not enough to take him over the £35000 threshold when he would start paying 40% tax
he also has a second job earning £1300
up until now he has paid 20% tax on everything he earns at his second job but his new tax code has come through as D0 and they say he has to pay 40% tax on his second job - have the rulings changed ????

HMRC will be estimating that his income, based on historical data, will give him an income in excess of the higher rate threshold.

Contact HMRC with an upto date estimate of his income for both employments. This will resolve the problem.

thank you - I'm pretty sure he didn't earn over £35000 this year with both jobs - if he did we've spent it without realising lol but seriously I think I would have noticed
they keep messing his tax codes up it drives me mad

Knowing HMRC, their records probably show him having 3 jobs each paying £35k! You're lucky he's not on a 50% tax code!

40% tax does not kick in at £35000.......it's £35000 + the personal allowance, next year £7475, so that will mean 40% tax only if he earns over £42475 in total.

well they messed with the wrong person then lol cos if its to do with money I will notice it lol
last year when hubby got a new company car they tried to charge us double the amount of tax they were supposed to
I worked the figures out on their own online calculator and had to ring them and tell them how much we should be paying !!!!
