Sandwich Toaster

We've just restarted using one after a 20 yr break.
The sandwiches are sticking horribly, could it be the olive spread we use nowadays instead of butter? The toaster is in good nick and we "butter" the outside of the bread.

This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

I place a little oil on kitchen roll and rub the machine before making the toasties...!
Then when I remove it I always use a plastic spatular and lift from the corner where the crease (center cut) is as it's less likely to make everything split open.

I use proper butter on the outside of the bread and haven't had a problem (and it tastes so good!!)2025 - Declutter to Move House

I've used flora light and olive spread and they seem to stick and with the flora it seems to have damaged the non stick so it peeled off! :eek:Newlywed at the point I joined the forum... now newly separated0

it will be the water content of the spread that's to blame... your toastie will be steaming!0

If the toaster is in good condition and it's coated with teflon then it shouldn't be necessary to butter it up on the outside.
The bread not sticking is a different problem and it's probably because the bread got 'soaked'.
How did you manage 20 years without sandwich toast??No trees were harmed in the posting of this message;
However, a significant number of electrons were slightly inconvenienced.0 -
Hi,
I would think its due to the composition of the spread. Try using butter and see if it helps. If so, you can either continue with butter or attempt to "season" the toaster with repeated coating and heating of the plates (I'd use veg oil)
I use butter on mine and don't have any issues other than bread sizes varying wildly!
If you still struggle, consider using a pan. Butter on the outside and pop in a preheated frying pan. Fry on both sides til golden and the filling is well heated.
Enjoy your toasties,

I've never buttered my toasties on the outside, if it's none stick it will be fine.0

Oh but if you butter them then the bread sort of fries in the butter and goes wonderfully crispy and delicious, not like fried bread, but not like toast either.
Its just fab.
I urge you to give it a whirl just once!
