Curtain Lining

Hi all.

My son's window faces in to the dawn, which was a total menace last year with him waking up at 5am. I have fitted an alleged blackout blind, but the bright sun still gets under and round it

His curtains are typical nursery curtains, very pale and wafer thin. They are tab top on a pole. How can I line these as the only linings I see seem to have a header tape thingy and these don't have tape.

Or should I just get new lined ones?

PS I do not have a sewing machine, and am horribly skint :o
Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

  • The MSE way of doing it is to buy a cheap fleece blanket, and pin it on with safety pins or tack it on by hand, it will be warmer and more of a blackout weight. Its also cheap, and can be cut with no sewing needed as fleece doesn't fray :)

  • Thanks for your reply - would I just tack that on underneath the tabs then? Does it look a bit gash though?

As Jackie Glasgow has said, get some dark/blackout material and pin it onto the existing curtains.
Try the charity shops. Hold the curtain up to the light and choose the ones with the least light coming through.
Alternatively buy blackout lining material from a curtain shop, just the size of the existing curtains. We bought some from "The Range" and it was non-fray material (with a plastic-like coating). We just cut it to the same size as the curtain and we sewed it to just under the tabs. Pinning or hand-stitching will be fine.
    Hope that helps.

When our lad was born we bought a black out blind and black out curtain linings for curtains on a pole (a curtain track will be even better closer to the wall). Hang the expense, its not worth losing 6 months of sleep for a few quid. Get a blind that you can cut to size so its really tight, fit a track with new thick/dark curtains and buy a pair of black out linings that fit the curtain. If you can do it cheaper then do, but the quicker the better or he'll get into an early wake up routine. These blinds and linings can stay on the window for the next 10 years or whatever so they will be an investment.
Oh, and get a track and curtains that are much bigger than the window, to minimise light coming around the edges.
And when he goes to bed make sure all the other bedroom doors are closed, curtains drawn so there's a minimum of light

It takes 3500 calories to lose a pound in weight. Target 13 lbs weight loss. 18.5lbs lost 2nd May - 28 September.
  • Thanks caroc - if I had a spare groat I would but I am really hard up at the moment. There is a blackout blind, but the sun does come through the very slight gap around it, and it is so bright!

I will try the charity shops - thank you all

  • The other idea is to buy a dark fleece blanket, perhaps navy, and just tack it around the window at night and remove it during the day.
