I have a damp issue in my house, and wanted to get a survey carried out to recommend remedial work required.

Does anyone have any experience or recommendations for someone who could carry out such a survey - any help appreciated.

I am based in Belfast.

    Tee,

We had to have a damp report done a few years ago as a condition of getting a mortgage, and cannot recommend Woodtox/Dampcheck enough, theyre based in East Belfast and charge for a survey for a mortgage but if it is for your own benefit I think it is free.
They eventually carried the work out for us and were absolutely fantastic, explaining what they were doing, and why and tidying up along the way. The boss was out and not scared of mucking in to get the job done.
We then discovered some really bad dry rot, got them back and told them we were working to a tight deadline due to having a plasterer booked. They came out and worked non stop until the job was done and Colin (the big boss!!) was even out on the 12th July working to get the job done.

They really are superb, professional and helpful especially in a field not many people know much about.

  • I used a company called Danlor a few years ago, they were fine from what I remember, didn't recommend any more work than was necessary.

Is Woodtox still in business I was told last year they were no longer in business. I have ongoing problem in my kitchen I had Gary McKibben out last year but he thought it was not rising damp. It is driving me crazy have had damp proofing put in about 3 years ago and that bit fixed again last year the plaster is coming off the wall again grrrrrrrrrrr.
  • Hi,

You could try James from Home Protection Services. We are a building contractors and use him for our damp protection and investigation.

07792544437 and tell him CPL Contracts recommended him

    Hope you get sorted!!

  • hi tee

about 6 months ago we needed a damp report carried out on the house we have subsequently bought.

I rang around a few places but one of the biggest problems is getting someone who is impartial- ie not just giving you a quote.

I foolishly got a quote from someone- i wont name them here- complete cowboys- who charged £40 and the report was rejected from the bank- it was basically a quote for work (if you need me to tell you who they are - please pm)!

I then found Ray McCleery - he quoted £275 (I tried to get it knocked down but didnt budge!) but I found him very indepth and conscientious- and also was able to ask him bits and bobs about the house as well.
most importantly, he just reports, so he has no need to say you need a damp proofing course if you dont need one!!

    his details i pulled from yell;

    Tel: 02897 512 725

    CSRT (Independent Remedial Consultant)
    237 Belfast Road, Ballynahinch, BT24 8UP

I have no affiliation to him btw

I had used Woodtox in the past but was also under the impression that they were no longer in business?
  • Building control officers will assess the problem and advise for a fee and i think it's really useful to get a neutral opinion. I've heard of people getting a dehumidifier type system in their roofspace to solve the problem.
  • Have damp in my kitchen, on partition wall adjoining neighbour's house, which is unoccupied. Will probably just keep repainting it - I've been here 4 months now. Have a dehumidifier working overtime, it fills up in 1 day despite having a large capacity, but still can't keep the damn down. That said, I used to just touch the bottom half of the walls and they were soaked but haven't seen that in ages.
