Can I just say to all those that are unfortunate enough to find themselves nailed to the wall with debt, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

I got into real trouble in my early 20's after I got divorced and found out my ex had literally wiped me off the financial map. I had nothing, and I was thousands of pounds in debt. All in my name too because I'd had my signature forged at the bank, to obtain an overdraft. I had a loan to pay back (we got this jointly, guess who had to pay it?) the CSA were on my back, credit cards to pay and I was skint.

Roll forwards a few years however and It's now all paid back except for about £1500 in CSA arrears, but I'm on that one.

Yes, I buried my head in the sand hoping it would all just go away, or dreamed of winning the lottery maybe to pay the whole lot off. Well, it aint gonna happen. The only way is to pay little and often. That's all I did, then suddenly I realised that I didn't quite owe so much anymore. OK, so now I'm 43, but boy have I struggled and managed to pay the lot off!!!

Keep chipping away, it does get easier!!!

  • Thanks for the replies.

I worked very hard to get rid of the mess I was in, it wasn't easy however and I never expected it to be. I made a lot of mistakes on the way too, but I learned from them. I often considered bankrupcy too, but decided to pay my way out of it.

These days I just have the "good debt" that Martin talks about. Mortgage, car finance etc. After saying that though I do use a credit card for most purchases, and although I often pay the whole balance off at once if I can't for any reason I pay a lot more than the minimum payment!

I often use an Argos card too for purchases. Now I know I may get slated for this. I tend to use "the companies" money for my purchases and pay it off usually all at once after the interest free period is about to expire. I always ensure that the money is there though, just in case.

So, all in all, I am a lot more clued up with money these days. In fact the wife will often say I'm as "tight as a camels a*se in a sandstorm"

So, as has been said many times, keep plugging away, you'll see an end to it. Honestly!
