bread tastes very yeasty! yeuck!

I have a panasonic sd253 breadmaker as recommended on this site and have been using DCL active dried yeast as per instructions for everything in the recipe book that came with the breadmaker. This is a large tin of yeast which I keep in the fridge and is in date, I got it in a health food shop as it was cheaper than those sachets. However none of the bread or pizza dough tastes like bakery or pizzeria as I can taste the yeast off it. I made the banana bread in it and it was delicious but it didn't need yeast. Am I doing something wrong or do others get this taste off their bread, I wanted bakery tasting bread.

Is the yeast in your tin "easy blend" yeast? The reason I ask is that "easy blend" is what you need for your breadmaker, and I wondered if the yeast you have is just ordinary dried yeast (which needs blending with water to activate it, and it isn't suitable for breadmakers).

Is the yeast fast-acting, granules or tiny grains? Does it specify that it is suitable for bread-makers? If it's granules, they might need activating in warm water if the programme isn't long enough for them to dissolve properly.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

the yeast is small grains, bigger than sand. The product does not mention breadmakers on it at all. Directions for use : dissolve dried yeast by adding slowly to at least 4 times it weight of water at blood heat. So do I take it that it is unsuitable for the breadmaker or should I dissolve it first, I just hate the taste of it no matter how little I use. Is there a yeast you would recommend that wouldn't break the bank.

I have had a Panny for 3 years and have never had yeasty tasting bread I use Sainsbury yeast and Lidl bread flour ( both give the best results in relation to their cost) ..The yeast you describe seems not to contain the other ingredients that are in fast acting packet yeast hence the yeasty taste.
Edit: you have bought the best bread maker ...it deserves some decent ingredients..Oh and also if you use any Whole meal flour try increasing the water content to 2 Tbl sp more than the recipe..

The cheapest I have seen is "Doves Farm Quick Yeast", which comes in a box of 125g for around 89p. I've seen it in Waitrose/Ocado. I haven't tried it so I don't know how well it compares to Hovis/McDougalls/Allinsons easyblend yeasts.

For price comparison, in Waitrose McDougalls sachets are 8x7g for 92p, although you don't need a whole sachet for a normal (500g flour) loaf. Allinsons 6x7g sachets are 86p.

Just wanted to say thank you to you all for your help. I bought some Allinsons easy bake yeast and the difference in taste and texture has been incredible. I made pizza dough and doubled all the ingredients, usually the dough came up to half way in the bucket, but yesterday it came up to the top. The yeast is also totally different in size, the original one was little grains, the new one is tiny, like fine sand. The pizzas turned out perfectly, well risen and not a yeasty taste at all, like a pizzeria. Looking forward to trying out the bread now.
