Thanks for the link Soba, that is a really nice recipe, I can almost smell it aleady.
So that's me off to have a go then!Oh dear, here we go again.0 -
Right, I got some sandalwood oil from the health food shop, bought ground nutmeg, but ground my own cloves, (a bottle of ground cloves in Asda was £2.12!!). I've done three oranges and one lemon, and I'm going to leave it at that to see what happens. I haven't got an airing cupboard so I've put the pomanders in paper bags (courtesy of the local fruit shop), and put them on a cooling rack in the cupboard where my central heating boiler is. I'm going to leave the door open to get a good flow of air around them and shake them in their spice mix every day. The smell is already fantastic. Reminds me, I must remember to feed the Christmas cake!!........0

What happened in 2009?
Did no one make pomanders?
I can never get enough of these little things, and every year even though I have some over 13 yrs old now, I get every single one out that did not rot in the first few weeks. and still, I make more!
They do last, and it's time to start making them for Yule 2010.
Go o. Be a devil ;-)0 -
My boys will be making them this year for Christmas!!Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -
Hi
Am I too late to start drying out the oranges in the airing cupboard ready for Christmas?0 -
I dont dry mine,I use a fresh orange and a skewer to make the initial hole, poked in the clove and kept going till it was all covered. Mine have never gone mouldy, just lose their smell eventually.0

If you wish to dry them, and have an airing cupboard then they should dry in a month.
I am going to make them with the children tomorrow and pop them in the airing cupboard til Xmas time0 -

Thank youSo you decorate them with the cloves before drying them out because I assumed you dry them out first then decorate?

Check the link above for a rough idea then adapt to suit yourself.
I have done them, but not for years... You need to stud them with the cloves before you dry them. I am not sure how you hang them tho... I guess you put ribbon thru them before you dry them.
Once they are dried they are really hard so it would be impossible to stick the cloves into the dried skin.
I don't usually use sandalwood, spices or the orris root but this year I will put them in a bag with mixed spice mix as i bought a pot the other day not realising i already had some in.

Hello,
so pleased to read that other people also make these.
I pierce the oranges with a wooden kebab-type skewer before pushing the cloves in then put them in the airing cupboard. Every few days I squeeze them gently to help the drying process & prevent the mould. I also push the cloves in again as they often seem to 'pop' out while drying.
The scent is amazing & I use them all year round to keep moths away from clothes.0
