Cabbage with black spots on it - can I use it?

Bought a white cabbage over a week ago - been in the fridge ever since. Now outside leaves going black but inside looks ok - can I still use it? Thinking of bubble & squeak...?

  • I'd use it!! Just throw away any leaves with black on, and wash thoroughly!!
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
  • I would still use it, just take of the leave with marks on.

    Hi Mics_chick,

Like everyone else I think the cabbage will be fine to use. Remove any leaves you are unhappy with and eat the rest.

  • yes do use it - I used to work pre-packing veg, including white cabbage, and they ALL look like that before they are trimmed and sent to the shops!! (often they have been in cold storage for a while before they are packed and sent to the supermarket). Just take the outer leaves off till it looks presentable, the inside will be fine!
  • I had some extremely withered parsnips in my fridge yesterday, I used them in the sausage casserole I made - they are fine! I only throw veg away when it is practically walking out the fridge on it's own!

It's just a bit of mould - most microbes on veg are spoilage ones, not one that are likely to do you much harm, so just do as per the other suggestions, not forgetting to use the old leaves on the compost heap if you have one!

:T A big thanks to everyone (especially FC - an expert in cabbage packaging! :D)

To be honest I said I bought it over a week ago but I honestly can't remember how long over a week it is - it could be 2 days or it could be 2 weeks - I really haven't a clue!

But it definitely looks ok on inside leaves so I am gonna use it up and the rest will be going into brown bin for recycling - because the compost bin ordered from council hasn't arrived yet!
