Just be wary of custom development - it is without question extremely expensive. If you use the first Uni kids who say 'yeah we can do that' you'll get terrible quality which will need to be thrown away afterwards. If you go to a consultancy, 20 days will cost you that £10k. If you find an independent/freelance architect you should expect £300+/day, but you may get an equity deal.
I can't advise much more without knowing more details (although if you want to NDA me I will have a look for you), but I'd be surprised if say 80+% of your site can't be code reuse/off-the -shelf. The custom development for the 20% will still be expensive, but at least you're not reinventing the wheel at £300/day!
Cloudfront is a CDN, but AWS (the same infrastructure that runs Amazon) also includes 'EC2' which suits processing/computations and is again PAYG. Some CDN's work out very expensive for overage (eg for streaming video they work out at £6/viewer/night as overage data costs!!), but CF/EC2 etc can be scaled intelligently - you rent virtual servers by the hour when you need them and can make some MASSIVE savings that way, certainly in start-up costs.
Like I say, on a public forum that's probably about as far as we should go, but I am happy to talk in private if you want just a bit of insider insight on the IT project side - I used to be an internal developer/PM for one of the major OS companies you know, and some other web companies in the past, I'll give you an idea of what's involved at least. Anyway just drop me a PM if you want to. Happy to help, and happy to help under NDA too, of course :-)0 -
Thanks Paddy, I will PM you later!0

If nothing else we can do a bit of a brain dump which will either encourage or terrify you :-$0
