Alternative cleaning products

Hi I am new here,

Can anyone recommend some good alternatives to use for cleaning round the house. Some of the shop bought stuff doesn't get the job done as I would like. I am having particular trouble getting my shower door clean?

Would appreciate any advice

Hi, May I ask what you are using at the moment? :)

I personally use very little, I've finally kicked my addiction to the smell of Sainsburys Lavender funiture polish and when this can has gone, I won't bother buying anymore.

Pledge wood floor cleaner has been gone along time ago, its more than £2.00 a bottle now, I must have been loopy

I still use Flash bathroom cleaner, but I think that will go when I've used this bottle, elbow grease being the best one :D

I've got a bottle of multi -purpose cleaner, which is cheaper than using fairy liquid as a multi purpose, and Bar Keepers friend is quite good for the odd stain. - Its a modern version of Vim  :D

I do use Fairy for washing up as it lasts longer than the cheaper brands and is oftern on offer.

Oh and I've just discovered Asda Smart Price Toilet Cleaner, Off Topic, but don't buy Smart Price Coleslaw - rank

I second stardrops, the one with ammonia is brilliant for really tough jobs. I take it the shower door is glass? If so, you could try hot water (as hot as you can cope with) with a glug of white vinegar and a squirt of washing up liquid/stardrops. The vinegar will help get through the limescale/soap scum.

I should add I rarely buy conventional cleaners. The main things I use:

    White vinegar by the gallon
Light olive oil (for wood polish)
    sea salt (for scrubs)
Soda Crystals (cleaning washing mashine or drains)
    Bicarb
Essential oils - mainly peppermint (I love the smell ;)/lemon (helps cut through grease)/tea tree (for anti-bacterial properties) but you could add any you like.

I have saved an absolute fortune over the years and don't need to worry about the kids getting hold of any nasties.

Thank you for all the tips. I shall look out for stardrops. Ive been using windolene glass wipes. They are great for normal windows but dont touch the shower door. Am wanting to try and save the pennies and use more natural things round the home.

    For bathroom I use Stardrops/white vinegar/water (1/3 of each).

Everywhere else (polishing, laminate floors, kitchen cleaning) I use Stardrops and Zoflora with water.

I also use stardrops - its brilliant on everything. I've made a spray of a good splodge of stardrops, a good splosh of vinegar topped up with water (on advice form here). I used it this weekend and my house is soooooo clean. It worked brilliantly on my shower door and my windows as well as the sinks and surfaces.

Only need to buy one product from now on and its cheap too!

(yup I'm a total stardrops convert. :rotfl:)

Be careful though as you only need the tiniest amount - I learnt that the hard way cleaning the top of my cooker for the first time - suds everywhere!

Do you mix these together? I have both in the house but didn't think you could mix the Zoflora with other cleaning products.

 eekk, now they are expensive, I'm sure a bottle of spray or the pink sort would be cheaper and it would certainly last longer.
  • I have just noticed that the tiles in the bottom corner of my shower are starting to look really yucky. The grout is started to go mouldy and the tiles look like they need a good scrub.

What do I clean it with? What is good for getting rid of mould on the grout? Dont mind a bit of elbow grease.
