Washing machine?? In balls?? Hand wash?? I really have no idea.

quick - into a bowl of lukewarm water! not you! the wool!!! if you have some bio detergent then chuck a handful in! otherwise soap (liquid handwash will do). leave to soak until cold then get the balls of wool out and squeeze them. are they still stained? if not then rinse them thoroughly and if still in balls chuck them in tumble dryer - put them in an old pillow case and tie a knot in end so they dont unravel. or put on radiators till dry.
If still stained then I would buy some biotex or napisan tom and soak them for 24 hours. keep them in water and dont let them dry out as that 'sets' the stain - then rinse and dry.

Have you one of those net bags used for washing tights and delicate things ? You could put wool balls in and put it on a cold/ 30degree wash preferably a wool or hand wash cycle if your machine has one . If not then a delicate cycle. Dont think you should use bio powder if it is real wool.
Now drying is another problem, maybe TD on low setting still in net bag?

I would have a very stern word to your boyfriend and make him replace what you can't salvage ,I know accidents happen but the cost of wool is rising daily almost. As a previous poster said dunk it in soapy water and squeeze out and then chuck into a pillow case and give it a short wash in the machine hopefully you maybe able to get some of the stain out but I wouldn't hold out much hope for it though

I've done the same with a huge mug of sugary tea.. handwashed in balls.. so I could squeeze and rinse as much as necessary.. was a bit stiff to knit up but the finished garments were fine once washed... baby yarns as well in white and lemon and peach!

Well, I'd wind it off into skeins/hanks before washing it. Round your arm would be good enough then tie the skein in four places, with a figure of * loop through the thickness of the skein. Then soak in cold water, then wash gently by hand in luke warm water with minimal agitation Roll in a towel to squeeze out the excess water, then hang up to dry and rewind into balls.

If though you chucked a large number of Hand Wash Only balls of wool in the washing machine I expect you'll have discovered why this was a bad idea by now. Felt balls?

So, how did it go? Did you manage to rescue your wool?

Is it wool or yarn or blends ?
The ball bands should tell you how to clean them.
