hand mixers

I've recently started baking - many thanks to this site for v successful weetabix brownies and banana bread! - and would like to get a hand mixer for xmas to help me esp where recipe asks for creaming butter and sugar, mixing all ingredients and whisking eggs/cream.

Does anyone have any recommendations of brands/specific models? I was looking elsewhere at some product reviews which seemed to suggest that some of the cheaper ones were held together by plastic which came off in the cake mix! - is this true??? And will all mixers do whisking as well or do I need one that has a special balloon whisk attachment? I already have a stick blender which I use a fair bit so I don't need one with a blender attachment too. Anything else to look out for?

  • Asda do a basic one for £5 or £6 quid. had mine two years and it is used regularly and not had any problems at all with it.It has metal whisk attachments and dough hooks with it.

  • I have a Kenwood hand mixer which must be nearly 30 years old now ( and used regularly) Unfortunately they don't do this particular model anymore (Chefette) but I see in the Argos catalogue Kenwood have a hand mixer for £14.99.
Mine just has beaters and they are fine for everything, don't need a ballon whisk.

I now have a Kenwood Chef but TBH I find my hand mixer more convenient (and just as efficient) for a lot of things.
