Can you reheat egg fried rice?

Kinda money saving I guess, I just made a batch of egg fried rice but way too much for one serving and was wondering if it is safe to reheat it tomorrow? Not sure if its safe with the egg and all.

  • I would, as long as it is cooked to 'piping hot' as they say on food packaging. I think the problem occurs when you leave it in warm temperatures for long periods of time (like in restaurants).

    I'm no professional though!

I'd be less worried about the egg, more worried about the rice - re-heated/leftover rice is one of the best ways to get food poisoning!

Stick it in the fridge and nuke to a ridculously high temp tomorrow and you *should* be fine - I make and freeze risotto and reheat that without any problems.

Don't keep more than a day or so though, and make sure you stick it in the fridge as soon as it is cool.

My DSS has been doing this virtually weekly for about the last four years and it doesn't seem to have done him any harm (admittedly the takeaway version)

bacillus cereus (bacteria) is associated with reheating rice. Nasty stuff.
    I'd just throw it out.

saying that I used to reheat rice dishes all through my uni days...but that was before I knew.

Thanks guys, I put it straight in the fridge and I plan to eat it tomorrow if its ok so it wont be sitting there long, and I plan on nuking it in the microwave tomorrow so hopefully it'll be alright
  • my sister is a enviromental health inspector and recommeds you do not reheat the rice due to an high risk of food poisoning. Rice is one of the worst for it, my sister says she always avoids rice dishes on buffets

I found out this the hard way earlier this year. I often do too much rice for myself and put the remaining rice straight in the fridge and do a egg fried rice next day. However I forgot to put it in the fridge over night but the kitchen was cool so I thought I would be ok...WRONG! Did my fried rice and within an hour I was singing to the bog white elephant!
Took me 48 hours to be ok! lesson learnt - rice must be kept very cold overnight or better still thrown out!
  • At the risk of repeating myself...

See the following link for more detailed info, but this extract should ensure you get the drift :
Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive. Then, if the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will germinate into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Reheating the rice won't get rid of these toxins.

A lot of the time, people assume it was the meat within the dish that caused their food poisoning, when, actually, it was down to the rice.
  • My partner says don't.

So it's more than my life's worth from every angle ;).
  • I have to say I often over-order when it comes to chinese (spoilt for choice or just a plain case of eyes bigger than my belly??!!) and have happily survived a well-microwaved portion of rice etc the following day!! Likewise I always tend to cook too much rice when cooking up a chilli or curry at home (not so thrifty but I'd much rather have a little too much rice rather than too little - who dares to disagree, particularly when cooking for guests!!), again though if too much is done I have previously left to cool fully, stored in an airtight container in the fridge and still had no probs if reheated fully, or indeed refried (again heated through fully) as part of a stir fry the next day. Maybe that is my good luck or purely a very strong stomach!!!

That aside , many thanks to the (medically savvy above) for raising the potential health issues regarding reheating rice, I did stand up and think!!
    - Not sure if this compromises the real ethos of the website's intentions (money saving etc) but off the back of that, I guess throwing away a bit of rice outweighs the cost of medication for a dodgy stomach or worse!!! Even a kilo bag of rice is probably cheaper than a trip to the docs etc?!!!

Cheaper still, would be avoiding that occassional chinese takeaway though eh?!! Whilst that would save more money, I like many of you I'm sure need the occassional treat!! If not then well done you - you're a much better person than I hehe!!

Save well my friends and stay healthy!! :)
