Vibrating Power Plate (exercise)

Has anyone got one of these or uses one at the gym and what results have you noticed, if any ?

Thinking of getting one but would like to hear about real peoples experiences and results.

Thanks in advance.

I went to PowerPlate (not the imitation vib machines!) classes 3 days a week for about 6 weeks last autumn, I did notice a bit of improvement but (a) it was a bit monotonous (b) I prefer exercising outside and (c) it was £60 a month!!!!!

Hello, I was also thinking of going to a powerplate class. WHere I work we have a personal trainer come in (paid for by the firm, so he is not making any money out of us) and he said not to waste your money ... hope this helps.:j

I've got one and have found it is great for toning (OH says I have a bottom now - not sure what was there before ) but for any real weight loss benefits you have to combine it with other 'moving about' exercise.

I have THIS ONE - and would warn you that they are bigger than they look :p So make sure you have plenty of space before you buy one.

Have a look for local salons offering a free 10 minute trial on their machine before you buy one. I tried it out first and thought it was ok but very boring to be stood staring at a wall every day - until I realised that I could point mine at the telly :rotfl: So now I use mine and catch up on my Sky+ at the same time :D

  • I bought one of these machines when they first came out.
It does tone you up if you use a high vibration level and keep at it - about 20 mins every other day or at least 3 times a week.
However, I kept mine upstairs in the bedroom and the vibration made the floor shake violently. The noise and vibration reverberated throughout the house disturbing everyone so I had to wait until I had the house to myself in order to use the machine.
Then I was worried that the neighbours could hear it and think,
"Every time she's on her own in that house, the vibrating starts"
The novelty wears off very quickly and I really couldn't stand the sensation. My head would vibrate so much that my teeth would buzz and my nose would get itchy, in fact I got a horrible itchy/tickly feeling all over my body. Another poster stated that they used it whilst watching TV - I tried this but found that I couldn't hear it over the noise of the machine and I couldn't focus on the screen because the vibration makes your vision blurry.

All in all, my conclusion is that I wasted my money on what I consider to be an instrument of torture and a total waste of time.
It currently resides in my garage, where it looms large as a constant reminder of my folly. Every time I accuse my husband of wasting money, he reminds me of the vibro exercise machine with an air of unnecessary triumphalism. Unless they increase in value, he's got me over a barrel.

Another point to consider is that they're always trying to flog them on Ideal World shopping channel - that should tell you everything you need to know. ;)
  • They are used for toning, stretching and massage.

I use them with my personal trainer to warm up on, before my kick boxing. We also you them to massage out (on low settings) pain, my trainer will stretch or press till pain eases.

I am unsure how people come in and think they have to stand and sit on them and they will work. You should be doing lunges, squats, planks, sit ups and all manner of other things on them, that done correctly would give you a great work out!

Do they not come with advice on how to use? In the right hands, they are an amazing workout, but, here's the thing you do still have to work hard if you want good results.

because everyone wants a quick fix where you can tone up without exerting any effort! ;)

some friends rave about them - if you do all the exercises on them you can have a really productive 30 min work out, but by all accounts, it hurts!! OP - try going to a class just once before buying one... not everyone likes them and it makes sense to have a try first.

  • I was using one of these at a gym, £60 a month too, for 20 mins sessions 10 times a month. I did notice a difference.

But soon stopped when my personal trainer said that bodies aren't meant to vibrate at that speed/
  • Thanks everyone for your input.
  • i have heard that they are really painful. You would be better off buying a slendertone in boots for around £40.
Never regret anything that made you smile ;)

I have used them in the past and use them on-off at the moment. I don't use them because I believe they make a difference, I use them because they keep me doing particular exercises for a set amount of time when I'd normally have walked off early! I hate anything weight lifting/squat/lunging and do about 10 normally before I get bored and go back to the treadmill/leave the gym but I get on the powerplate and do them and I manage an entire minute.

I don't and never really noticed a big difference, perhaps my stregnth improving but that goes without saying: I'm doing more with weights then I ever did. When I stopped? noticed little if any difference either.

I do like the powerplates for stretches and massage though, I feel I get quite a deep stretch when I use them but you do need to be careful as the machine can leave your legs for example feeling nu,b when your using it and so you don't realise how far your stretch and can easily over-stretch which can cause injury. Its abit like dynamic as oppose to static stretching: be careful!
