a RED letter!!! from 2002!!

hi all im new to the site and i am seeking some guidance.

i recently recived a letter from red dept collections for a dept back in 2002. i called up asking about this as its so old. i asked when was the last payment i made and he stated it was 15 feb 2002!!! to my shock i said this falls into the 6 year thinggy..lol didnt know what to call it!!

he said the dept will never go away:eek:!! i said i need to figure this out and thanks for the information. whats my next plan of action thx for your time.

    What you need to say is that the debt would be statute barred under the limitation act (assuming there is no CCJ for the debt).
    But rather than phone them you need to write to them with the SB letter template and although he is right that the debt will still legally exist they are no longer allowed to chase you for the debt once you tell them you don't intend to pay - templates and links to factsheets are here

    The debt is statute barred. A creditor has the right to request you pay it, but cannot enforce the debt. If you notify them in writing that you do not intend to pay, they cannot request you do so again (and will probably sell it on to another creditor).

    There are letters for statute barred debts available on the board or from the nationaldebtline website.
