Should I accept the job if offered?

Hi everyone, I wanted to get your opinion on a job situation that may or may not arise.

I relocated to the South East from Yorkshire at the beginning of this week to join my husband. I finished my previous job last Friday and I had made my CV searchable in January; I was contacted by a number of agencies. I am ideally looking for a permanent position which is between 3 and 5 full days and nearby to the Slough area.

I had an interview on Wednesday for a job (A) which I expect to hear back from the agency today. The job pays OK but it is only on a 6-9 month contract with the possibility to go perm. The working hours weren't exactly as advertised and it is a little further than I would ideally like to go.

I have another interview arranged for next Wednesday which is a closer job (B), a 12 month contract, nearer to home, better paid and with a company that I would really like to work for. My CV has also been submitted for another position that sounds really ideal, which is a permanent position, well paid and in an industry that I would really like to get into.

My question is, if I am offered Job A today should I take this? It's not really an option to take the job and give backword or leave if I find something permanent whilst working there, as the agent stipulated that the company definitely didn't want someone who wouldn't commit to the term of the contract, and I had to promise I would do this before they sent me for an interview. I don't really want to risk damaging the relationship with the company or the recruitment agent. Having seen the other jobs available I am really interested in these. On the other hand I don't want to be unemployed long term!

I have only been here for a few days so do you think that I should bide my time and see what other opportunities come in, and if I manage to impress the recruiters on Wednesday?

Thank you

I would go to the interview on Wednesday, if you hear back from agency tell them you need a few days to think about it. Are you likely to get an offer from Weds or is it likely to be you going back for a second interview?
  • To be honest I'm not sure if there will be a second interview for job B- they are wanting to fill the position quickly so I would hazard a guess that it would be one interview only.

I think that you may be right, I could ask the agency for a few days to consider it, as they were aware that I would have preferred a permanent position. I didn't get great vibes from the interview, and I was up against three other people so perhaps it won't be a dilemma after all!
  • Honest opinion as I am a recruitment consultant in the South East..

Job aren't easy to find at the moment, there are more good candidates then there are jobs. I would not have the view that 'something better will come a long' because more than likely it won't.

I would accept the 1st offer, but still go the the interview for 2nd job. Keep your options open, you can always let down offers that come your way. Do not turn down job interviews - keep your options open!

  • Thanks, I wasn't offered the job anyway as they had another candidate who had industry experience.

I am making lots of preparation however for the interview tomorrow- wish me luck!
  • Good luck xxx
